On Tuesday April 8th, 2008, the screening of "Juego de escena", by Brazilian documentalist Eduardo Coutinho, marks the start of the tenth Buenos Aires International Festival of Independent Cinema (BAFICI), which takes place each year with screenings at various venues around the city. The festival, organized by the Ministry of Culture of Buenos Aires, features Argentinian and international films and Argentinian shorts. It awards prizes in a variety of categories. Only the author's first works and second movies are accepted in the official contest.
This year's program features works by renowned directors like Abel Ferrara, Werner Herzog, Peter Bogdanovich, Martin Scorsese, and Todd Haynes, as well as Argentinian new works by Albertina Carri, Andrés Di Tella, Lucía Cedrón, among others.
The opening screening will take place at Teatro 25 de Mayo, (Av. Triunvirato 4436) in Villa Urquiza neighborhood, at 8 pm, and until April 20th the festival will continue at 9 different venues with the screening of over 300 films. The closing and award ceremony will take place on April 19th at Atlas Lavalle theater, with the film "Les Chansons d´Amour", by French director Christophe Honoré.
For the first time in the festival history, this year there will be free open air projections of local films at the Pasaje Carlos Gardel, in Abasto, every Saturday and Sunday. The festival's Meeting Point will be open every day at Abasto Shopping Mall from 10 am to 10 pm.
Among the BAFICI's musical activities, and organized by the french Embassy, on April 18th in Niceto Club French musician Benjamin Biolay will present his latest album, Trash Yeye.
Other special activities during the festival include seminars with free entrance at Abasto Shopping mall, round tables, talks with directors, books presentations, live music every Wednesday at Teatro 25 de Mayo.
