The Olympic Torch will make its journey through countries around the world, including United Kingdom, United States, Australia, India, and Japan, before arriving in China on August 8th, 2008, for the opening ceremony of the Olympic Games Beijing 2008. In America it will only visit 2 cities, and Argentina has the privilege of being the only South American city, when on April 11th the torch will make its way through the Obelisk. The usual route of the torch is of 21 km, but in Buenos Aires it will cover 14 km. It will start on Puerto Madero, and will continue through Casa Rosada, Av. 9 de Julio, Av. del Libertador, Figueroa Alcorta, up to the Club Hipico Argentino. It will be televised live to all the countries that broadcast the Olympic games. The Argentine athletes in charge of carrying the torch are: Magdalena Aicega (hockey), Juan Curuchet (cycling), Gabriel Batistuta (soccer), Manuel Contepomi (rugby), Nora Vega (skating), Alberto Heguy (polo), Pablo Chacón (boxing), Carlos Rodríguez (para-Olympic athlete), Ubaldo Fillol (soccer), Paola Suárez (tenins), and Marcelo Alexandre (cycling).The events programed for Friday April 11th in Buenos Aires are:
- 1.30 pm: Amphitheater Lola Mora, Costanera Sur, Av. Tristan Achaval Rodríguez and Boulevard Rosario Vera Peñaloza: Show with the presence of classic dancer Iñaki Urlezaga, and "Tangos" Orchestra, with musicians from the National Symphonic Orchestra.
- 2 pm: Opening ceremony, in charge of the Military Band of "Regimiento 1 de Infantería Patricios". Lighting of the torch.
- 2.15 pm: departure of the first Torch Holder.
- 4.30 pm: Closing ceremony at Club Hipico Argentino
- 5 pm: Closing show with folk singers Luciano Pereyra and Soledad Pastorutti.
To attend the closing ceremony, tickets must be picked-up at different sporting venues of the city of Buenos Aires, among them: the Municipal Golf Course, the KDT complex, Salguero 3450, and Freire 234, Colegiales.
