Options for Opera lovers in Buenos Aires

  • LA BELLE HELENE
La Belle Hélène ("The Beautiful Helen" or "The Fair Helen"), "Opéra bouffe" in three acts, is an "Operetta" by Jacques Offenbach from an original French Libretto by Henri Meilhac and Ludovic Halévy. It's the story of Paris and Helen, and her abduction by the Trojan prince disguised as a shepherd. It was first performed at Paris's Théâtre des Variétés on December 17, 1864, and it's remained a favourite comic opera ever since.
It will be presented in June 2008 in Buenos Aires by Buenos Aires Lirica, at Teatro Avenida, with musical direction by Dante Ranieri and régie by Peter MacFarlane, and the participation of: Mariana Rewerski, Carlos Ullán, Osvaldo Peroni, Walter Schwarz, Vanesa Mautner, and Buenos Aires Lirica chorus and orchestra.

Dates: June 6, 8, 10, 12, and 14, 2008.

  • LA BOHEME
In the year of the 150th anniversary of the birth of its creator, Giacomo Puccini, the Centro Cultural Konex presents his opera La Bohème.
For the first time in the world, the great Puccini's creation will coexist in the same theater with "Rent", the musical based on it, which is being played with great success.

  • L'ITALIANA IN ALGIERI
Considered, after the “Barber of Seville”, one of the finest comedies in the operatic repertoire, "L´Italiana in Algeri" appears in Rossini's work in the year 1813, making its twenty-one year old composer the toast of Venice. The same day of its opening "L´Italiana in Algeri" was an extraordinary success; the Venetian public made the singers repeat almost all the numbers, and Rossini was acclaimed with an authentic ovation.
The librettist, Angelo Anelli, based his drama on the legend of Roxelana, a young Russian girl who in 1523 was captured into slavery by the Turks, and who later, through her guile and intrigue married the Sultan, Suleiman the Magnificent.
