Teatro Colon celebrates 100 years

A concert by Orquesta Filarmónica de Buenos Aires (Buenos Aires Philharmonic Orchestra), on Wednesday May 21st, will mark the start of the 20 activities programmed for the celebration of the Teatro Colon's 100 years, that include a symphonic concert, recitals, chamber opera and ballet.

On Wednesday May 21st, 8.30 pm, at Teatro Opera (Av. Corrientes 860), the Buenos Aires Philharmonic Orchestra, directed by Arturo Diemecke, will offer a concert dedicated to Alberto Ginastera, in the 25th anniversary of his death. It will feature the "Obertura para un Fausto criollo", the suites of the ballets Panambí and Estancia, and the Concert for piano and orchestra Nº 1, with the participation of Luis Ascot as a soloist.

On Friday May 23rd, 6.00 pm, at the Aula Magna of Colegio Nacional de Buenos Aires (Bolivar 263), with free entrance, the presentation of the book "Francisco Saverio Pellizzari, constructor of Teatro Colón", in a round table presided by Teatro Colon's General Director, Dr. Horacio Sanguinetti.

On Sunday May 25th, the day that Teatro Colón celebrates it 100th anniversary, there will be different acts and activities. From 11 am to 1 pm visitors will be able to access, with free entrance, to "The birthday of the Colón”, a tour around the Foyer and the historic-artistic exhibition in the underground facilities of the theater, for the whole family; and "The Colón iside the Colón", an exhibition of 70 photographs by Arnaldo Colombaroli, artist of the house. At 11.00 am, at the Foyer there will also be a free representation of Rossini's "The Barber of Seville", in a version in Spanish adapted for children, co produced with Fundación Konex. At 3.00 pm, at the Salón Dorado of Teatro Colón, there will be an act with entrance by invitation only, in which Dr. Horacio Sanguinetti will present a commemorative concert by soprano Ana María González, tenor Luis Lima and Maestro Enrique Ricci, and the presentation of the postal stamp of Correo Argentino “100 años del Teatro Colón”.

The central act of May 25th will be at 5 pm, at Teatro Opera (Av. Corrientes 860), with a Lyric Gala by the Teatro Colon's Stable Choir and Orchestra, the Teatro Colon's Children's Choir, with several orchestra directors and famous national singers. For this Lyric Gala people will be able to pick up two tickets per person at the theater's ticket office, from Monday May 19th.

On Tuesday May 27th there will be two concerts: at 1 pm, with free entrance, the Teatro Colon's Superior Art Institute (Instituto Superior de Arte Teatro Colón) will present fragments of Donizetti's Don Pasquale at Teatro del Globo (Marcelo T. De Alvear 1155); and at 7 pm another Lyric Gala with Teatro Colon's Stable Choir and Orchestra, the Teatro Colon's Children's Choir, with several orchestra directors and famous national singers. On Wednesday May 28th, 8 pm, at Auditorio de Belgrano (Virrey Loreto 2348), will take place the Lyric Gala of Young New Voices, with Master Enrique Ricci on the piano accompanied by young singers.

At the theater of Sociedad Hebraica Argentina (SHA) (Sarmiento 2233), the Colon Theater's Chamber Opera will present on May Thursday 29th, Friday 30th, Saturday 31, and June Sunday 1st, "Il mondo della luna", by Franz Joseph Haydn.
On Saturday May 31st, 6.00 pm, the Colon Theater's Academic Orchestra, directed by Carlos Calleja, will perform at the Law School (Av. Figueroa Alcorta 2263). The program will be dedicated to works by Beethoven, Bruch, Grieg, and Liszt, with the participation of violinist Luis Salva as a soloist. Entrance is free.

The celebration of the centenary will culminate with the presentations of Colon Theater's Stable Ballet, with direction of Guido De Benedetti, that will take place from Thursday May 29th until Thursday June 5th at Teatro Opera (Corrientes 860). Along with Buenos Aires Philarmonic Orchestra, directed by Carlos Calleja, Bruno D’Astoli and Mario Benzecry will interpret the Program of the Centenary, with acts from the Swan Lake, La bayadera and Coppelia. Guest artists will be: Iñaki Urlezaga (May 29th and 30th), Ludmila Pagliero (May 31st and June 1st), Maximiliano Guerra (June 4th and 5th), and the company's main figures.
