Commemorating the 400th anniversary of the death of El Greco, the National Museum of Fine Arts (MNBA) presents the exhibition "El Greco and the Painting of the Impossible", that will be inaugurated on October 28th, 2014.
The star of the exhibition will be the painting "Las lagrimas de San Pedro" (The tears of Saint Peter), from the collection of El Greco Museum in Toledo, Spain.
When in 1936 the National Museum of Fine Arts (MNBA) acquired "Jesús en el huerto de los olivos" (‘Jesus in the Garden of Olives’) by Doménico Theotocópuli, "El Greco", it became one of the most relevant works from an ancient master at the Museum. Now, the MNBA joins the international homages dedicated to the artist with this exhibition, centered on three of his oil painting with a religious theme: "Jesus in the Garden of Olives" from the MNBA, "Jesus Bearing the Cross Uphill", from the collection of the National Museum of Decorative Arts (MNAD), and "The tears of Saint Peter", from El Greco Museum in Toledo, specially lent for this occasion.
