Ladies Polo: Princess Maxima Cup

On Friday, December 5 2008, a new edition of the Princess Maxima Ladies Polo Cup will take place at Hurlingham Club of Buenos Aires.

Organized by the French Ladies Polo Association (LPA), the Cup Princess Maxima gets together some of the best female Polo players in the world. This also a charity event in aid of Fraternidad de Ayuda al Nino, an organization endorsed by Princess Maxima of the Netherlands.
The tournament will start at 4 PM, and the final will be at 5:30 PM. At 6:30 PM prizes will be awarded, and at 7:30 PM the event will be closed with a cocktail.

2008 BMW Golf Cup International

The World Final of the largest tournament series for amateur golfers in the world comes to Argentina. 141 excellent amateur golfers from 49 different countries will tee off at one of the most famous golf clubs in the country: the Jockey Club. The competitors have qualified from over 1000 tournaments around the world.
The World Final has previously been held in Australia, Mexico, Portugal, Thailand, South Africa and Spain, amongst others.
One of the best golfers in Argentina will make a guest appearance as the highlight of this year's BMW Golf Cup International: Andrés Romero, one of the top 40 golfers in 2008.

The Argentina Tennis Cup, sponsored by Peugeot (Copa Argentina de Tenis Peugeot 2008), will be disputed again this year from December 11th to December 14th, 2008.

Candombe and Tango in the streets of Buenos Aires on December 6

Two open air musical events will take place next Saturday, December 6 2008, in the streets of Buenos Aires, where visitors will be able to experience two of the most traditional musical rythms of the Río de la Plata.

In the first one, in San Telmo, between 4 PM and 11 PM, 25 carnival groups ("comparsas") with over two thousand Argentinian and Uruguayan artists in their colorful costumes, present the "Llamada de Candombe de San Telmo", a parade of drums, music and dance. The "llamada" is traditional Uruguayan event in which the "comparsas" are called in to play the "candombe", a musical genre originated in Africa and brought to South American in the XVII and XVIII centuries by the African slaves. At Pasaje San Lorenzo there will be 4 bonfires for the tuning of the drums, that will start at 3 PM.
The parade starts at Defensa & av. Independencia, and each "comparsa" takes 1 hour to cover the 8 blocks until Defensa & Caseros, in Paque Lezama.
This event is totally free of charge.

The second of these events is "La Gran Milonga Nacional", starting at 8 PM in Avenida de Mayo, where people will have the chance to dance to tango orchestras that will be performing live on three stages, with the participation of professional dancers.
Some of the participating orchestras are: Los Reyes del Tango, Gente de Tango, Sexteto Milonguero, Roberto Siri and his Show, Orchestra of the Argentine Army, and Típica La Otra Vereda.
This mega event will cover Avenida de Mayo from Bolívar to Bernardo de Irigoyen, and it´s also free of charge.

Gallery Nights: Last edition of 2008

On Wednesday, December 3th, 2008, from 7 PM, , Gallery Nights, the original circuit for art lovers around more than 35 art galleries, antique shops, museums and cultural centers, presents its last edition of 2008, that will take place in the neighborhood of Palermo Viejo. Gallery Nights is organized by the art magazine Arte al Día, the last Friday of every month.

As always, there will be live music and free shows, and the guests will be welcomed with a complimentary glass of Chandon champagne. A “LAN Audio Guide Tour”, is available (in Spanish only). 67th Argentine Pato - Horseball Championship

The 67th Argentine Hoseball Championship (Abierto Argentino de Pato Copa Cardón), the most important tournament of this sport in Argentina, will take place from November 29 through December 20, 2008.

Horseball ("Pato") is a traditional Argentine equestrian sport, practiced since the beginning of the XVII century, and declared National Sport in 1953.

The preliminary stages will take place on November 29 and 30, and December 6, at Campo Argentino de Pato, in Campo de Mayo (Buenos Aires), with the participation of 8 teams made up of the best players of our national sport. The semi finals, on December 14, and the final, on December 20, will be held at the Campo Argentino de Polo in Palermo.

Marcel Duchamp in Buenos Aires

Fundación Proa opens its new new building in La Boca with an exceptional exhibition: "Marcel Duchamp: una obra que no es una obra “de arte”, (Marcel Duchamp, a work that is not a work "of art") curated by Elena Filipovic, that includes 120 works and some of his most important "ready-mades", a combination or arbitrary arrangement of everyday objects.
Marcel Duchamp was born on July 28th 1887 in Blainville-sur-Crevon, a small town of Ruan, in the northeast of France. This French artist, who became an American citizen, is one of the most outstanding creators of 20th century.
Friend of Picasso, Matisse, Man Ray, Andy Warhol, and Braque, he revolutionized the intellectual world of his time when he presented a porcelain urinal as a work of art. In the beginning of 1917, Duchamp named the urinal Fountain and submitted it to the Exhibition of the Independents, a show without jury or prizes organized in Paris. As a result of this initiative, there was a controversy about what defines a ‘work of art’. Throughout his life, Duchamp wondered if any ordinary object with his signature and shown in a museum could be considered a work of art. That question has been left unanswered.
Between 1918 and 1919, apparently escaping from the war, Duchamp lived in Buenos Aires. There is very little information about his stay, only a few letters sent to his friends, colleagues and relatives. When he found out the war was over, he went back to Paris.
Marcel Duchamp died at 81 years old in Neuilly-sur-Seine, Paris, on October 2nd 1968. After his death, there were important retrospectives both in the USA and Europe, such as the ones in the Philadelphia Museum of Art, Tate Gallery and the Pompidou Centre. 40 years after his death, Fundación Proa presents for the first time in Lartin America a solo exhibition of Marcel Duchamp.
Together with the opening of the exhibition, there will be the First International Colloquium about Marcel Duchamp in Buenos Aires, a debate on the influence of the artist’s works. The Colloquium will be coordinated by Paul Franklin, editor-in-chief of the prestigious magazine Etánt donné Marcel Duchamp, yearly publication of the Association pour l'Étude de Marcel Duchamp (Association for the study of Marcel Duchamp)

Free cultural activities during Spring in Buenos Aires

The Ministry of Culture of the city of Buenos Aires invites the public to participate in the over 250 free cultural and artistic activities of the program "Primavera Buenos Aires" (Buenos Aires Spring), that will be held between October 5 and December 13, 2008, including a concert by the worldwide famous Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra at 9 de Julio Avenue, on November 22.
For 11 weekends, parks, squares, and open air spaces in the city will be the setting of varied activities for adults and children, all of them free of charge, such as musical shows, tango, theater, puppets, story telling, magic shows, film screenings, poetry, etc.
There will also be a program of recitals at Parque Roca, urban music at the Greek Amphitheater in Puerto Madero, tango in Mataderos, and the tour of Orquesta de Tango and the City´s Symphonic Band around the different neighborhoods of Buenos Aires.

Casa FOA, the most important yearly exhibition where decorators, architects, designers, and landscapers showcase the local and international trends in architecture, interior design, and landscaping, celebrates its 25th anniversary at Puerto de Frutos de Tigre.
The renovation project aimed to maintain the image of the port, adding contemporary architectural elements.

115th Argentine Open Polo Championship 2008

Saturday, November 15, 2008, will mark the start of the 115th Argentine Open Polo Championship (Abierto Argentino de Polo, or just "El Abierto"), that will take place until December 6, 2008. The best polo players in the world will gather at this tournament, one of the oldest and most prestigious events in the international polo calendar, held every year at the Campo Argentino de Polo in Palermo. It is also one of the main social events in Buenos Aires.

Tickets are on sale through Ticketek Argentina. Tickets for the main matches and the best seats can get sold out in just a few hours, specially the tickets for the final match on December 6th. Entry tickets for the individual matches will be available from the Monday previous to every match, but only subject to availability after the sale of the "abonos". Polo, Art, & Charity Events

Two simultaneous events bring together Art and Polo in aid of charity organizations:

Buenos Aires Polo & Arts is a charity exhibition, sponsored by the Ministry of Culture of the City of Buenos Aires, that will take place between November 15 and December 6, 2008, in different spots of a circuit comprised by Avenida Alvear, Quintana, Posadas, and Arroyo Street. The exhibit conisists of 30 real-life horse sculptures that have been intervened by renowned artists, like: Marino Santa María, Nora Iniesta, Martiniano Arce, Ernesto Pesce, Mireya Baglieto, Febe de Felipe, Gimena Ferrari, Eduardo Pla, Xil Buffone, Alicia Carletti, Alejandro Moy, Juan Astica, Carolina Antoniadis, Jorge González Perrín, Rosana Fuertes, Sergio Avello, Daniel Ontiveros, Jorge Álvaro, Claudia Lucini, Edgardo Jiménez, Sofía Pombar, Silvana Comendatore, Carolina Espinel, Gabriela Pertovt, Gerardo Felestein, Marcelo Toledo, Gabriel Álvarez y Analía Werthein.
At the end of the exhibition and during the closing party on December 9 at Tango Porteño, the pieces will be auctioned in aid of Fundación Hospital Fernández.
During the exhibition period, 8 of these pieces will remain at Casa de la Cultura, Avenida de Mayo 575. The remaining sculptures will be placed along avenida Alvear at 1976, 1946, 1920, 1902, 1890, 1862, 1850, 1807, 1829, 1881, 1891, 1917, 1939 and 1653; Arroyo 980, 963, 962, 896, 886, 860, 834, 823, 845 and 869; Posadas 1030 and 1089. Some of them will be part of a setting that recreates scenes typical of the history of Polo.

Polo& Art® is both an artistic and a charity event that will take place during the Gold Cup at Ellerstina Polo Club. The top handicap polo players from Argentina that have generously donated their polo helmets to be decorated by contemporary artists in colorful and attractive designs are: Facundo Pieres, Gonzalo Pieres (Jr), Juan Martín Nero and Pablo Mc Donough (Ellerstina); Mariano Aguerre, Adolfo Cambiaso, Bartolomé Castagnola and Lucas Monteverde (La Dolfina); Eduardo Novillo Astrada, Miguel Novillo Astrada (La Aguada); Bautista Heguy (Black Watch); Marcos Heguy and Agustín Merlos (Pilará); Ignacio Heguy (Indios Chapaleufú II).
The polo helmets are displayed during the Gold Cup tournament from November 2 to November 13 at Ellerstina Polo Club in Pilar, and will be auctioned on Thursday, November 13 at the closing party. All the funds raised from the auction will be donated to Banco de Alimentos, The food bank of Buenos Aires that offers support and help in the maltrunition problems in Argentina. Banco de Alimentos is part of Global Food Banking Network.

From November 21st to November 30th, 2008, with the presence of over 1200 horses with the best genetics, the national champions selected by the Argentine Breeders Associations, the fourth edition of the most important equestrian exhibition in Latin America: "Nuestros Caballos (Our Horses), IV International Equestrian Exhibition", will be held at La Rural Exhibition Center, Buenos Aires.

The program of the exhibition "Nuestros Caballos" includes a variety of activities, including the finals of the national rodeo and reining championships, show jumping, Pan-American Pato-horseball Championship, carriage exhibitions, traditional "gaucho" garments competitions, among others. The entertainment continues with parades and a horseback riding school for children.

During the exhibition, as traditional, the election of national champions of breeds "Criolla", "Árabe", "Cuarto de Milla" (Quarter Horse), "Polo Argentino", "Silla Argentino", "Tiro Argentino", "Percherón", "Petiso", "Appaloosa" and "Peruano de Paso" will take place, and, for the first time in Argentina, the presence of Pure Spanish Horses.

At the same time, in the academic field, the IV International Conference on Equine Production, organized by the Universidad Católoca Argentina and the Secretary of Agriculture, Livestock, Fishing and Food, in which the thechniques of reproduction, genetics, nutrition and health, among others, will be discussed. Also, the first International Meeting on Equine Therapy in Sports, organized by Fundación Equino Terapia San Juan and Hipocampo Riding School will take place on November 26.

November in Buenos Aires, Jacarandás in bloom

It is November, spring is here, and the city of Buenos Aires is full of lavender clouds of jacaranda trees in bloom. They are all over the city, making this time of the year a special one to admire these beautiful trees.

The first specimen of jacarandá, original from the North-west of Argentina, was planted in Buenos Aires in 1875 with the inauguration of the 3 de Febrero Park, and then it was spread all over the city for its ornamental value in the different plantation programs.

Those of you who visit Buenos Aires in November will be lucky to witness this beautiful natural spectacle, and for those who can´t visit, here are some pictures:

"Por la calle" Textile design tour - San Telmo

"Por la Calle" is an urban self-guided tour, to discover the keys for the identity of design in Argentina. Por la Calle invites visitors to stroll around those shops where textile and clothing design is present, enjoying the talent and creations of Argentine designers in their own spaces.

This edition of Por la Calle 2008 will take place in San Telmo, on Saturday, November 29, 2008, from 2 PM to 8 PM. The routes are self guided, and visitors will be able to pick up free printed material that will guide them through the circuits, at 3 meeting points:

• Plaza Dorrego
• Perú & Méjico
• Carlos Calvo & Bolívar

There will be 3 different thematic routes: Form, Texture, and Ensemble Every participating shop will be signaled with yellow balloons for their easy identification. This event is totally free of charge.

San Telmo is a new design circuit that combines the creativity of avant-garde Argentine designers with a bohemian atmosphere.

Foundation ProTejer and INTI textiles are the promoters of this event, in the belief that Argentina is generating new trends, and with the aim of helping people understand the personal and original vision of Argentine designers.

International Show Jumping Competition "Haras El Capricho"

The 10th International Show Jumping Competition CSIO-W Haras El Capricho will take place on November 13, 14, 15, 16, and November 21, 22, 23, 2008, in the town of Capilla del Señor, province of Buenos Aires. This is one of the most important Show Jumping competitions in Latin America, sponsored by the Argentine Equestrian Federation and the International Equstrian Federation (FEI).

The contest will take place in 2 of the 4 international level courses of El Capricho, with fences brought specially from the Olympic games, arranged by course designers Olaf Petersen and Frank Rothenberger.

The most important events in the competion are:

Friday, November 14: Nations Cup
Saturday, November 15: Speed Derby and Combined Carriages-Jumping Course
Sunday, November 16: World Cup Competition/Grand Prize: (a car will be awarded to the winner)
Saturday, November 22: International Show Jumping Competition

As every year, there will be live music shows: Soledad Pastorutti, on Sunday, November 16, and Puma Rodríguez, on Sunday, November 23, both at 12 noon with free entrance.

The "Gran Premio Republica Argentina", one of the most important and traditional competitions in the national show jumping calendar, will take place from November 28 to November 30, 2008, at Club Hipico Argentino, Av. Figueroa Alcorta 7285, with the participation of the best Argentine riders.
The main event will be held on Sunday, November 30, from 2 PM, with attractions for the whole family.

Gallery Nights November 2008 Edition

On Friday, November 28th, 2008, from 7 PM, a new edition of Gallery Nights 2008, the original circuit for art lovers around more than 70 art galleries, antique shops, museums and cultural centers, will take place in the neighborhoods of Retiro and Barrio Norte in Buenos Aires. Gallery Nights is organized by the art magazine Arte al Día, the last Friday of every month.

As always, there will be live music and free shows, and the guests will be welcomed with a complimentary glass of Chandon champagne. A “LAN Audio Guide Tour”, is available (in Spanish only). Those who wish to participate in this virtual experience can get to the LAN stand at the British Arts Centre (Suipacha 1333), from 7 PM to 10 PM, and, with an ID, will be able to pick up an MP3 with the information about the galleries and exhibits chosen. This information can also be downloaded from www.artealdia.com to make the visit with your own MP3.

Price Waterhouse Coopers continues offering a series of conferences for the public to attend and talk with the most outstanding specialists in the art world. This month the meeting will be with artist Adrián Villar Rojas, with moderation by Javier Villa. It will take place at 7 pm at the British Arts Centre Auditorium, Suipacha 1333.

The traditional circuit of Gallery Nights covers from Plaza San Martín to Callao and from Tucumán to Libertador. There is also a free transportation service with fixed stops and a constant route to get to all of the spots in the circuit.

Festival of India in Buenos Aires

The Embassy of India in Argentina and the government of the city of Buenos Aires present the Festival of India, intended to promote and portrait the Indian culture in our country. The inauguration will take place on Friday, November 21 at 12 noon, in the Centro Cultural Borges. The rest of the activities in the festival, that will last until November 28, will be held in four venues: Centro Cultural Borges, Hotel Sheraton, Centro Cultural San Martin, and Casa de la Cultura, every day of the week from 12 noon to 8 PM.
The festival includes an exhibition of culture and handicrafts, with a live demonstration by Indian artisans of their work; dance and music performances representing different regions of India; "Kathak" group and an ensemble of Rajasthani folk dance group; a fashion show; seminars; a Bollywood film festival; painting and photo exhibitions; workshops and seminars on yoga, ayurveda and meditation; a golf tournamet at the Jockey Club of Buenos Aires; and a gastronomic festival at the Sheraton Hotel (by invitation only, calling 4318-9264).

All the events except the food festival are free and open to the public.

Opera: Mozart's Le Nozze di Figaro

Juventus Lyrica, the non profit Opera Association, closes its 2008 season with the presentation of "Le Nozze di Figaro", (The Marriage of Figaro), by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart.
Le nozze di Figaro is an opera buffa with Italian libretto by Lorenzo da Ponte, based on a stage comedy by Pierre Beaumarchais: La folle journée, ou le Mariage de Figaro (1784).
The action takes place after the events in "The Barber of Seville" with the same characters, and recounts a single day in the life of Count Almaviva in Spain. Rosina is now the Countess, and Figaro is her husband´s valet. The Count is seeking the favors of a servant, Susanna, who is to be wed to Figaro. The Count detects the interest of a young page, Cherubino, in the Countess, so he tries to get rid of him by giving the page an officer's commission in his regiment. Figaro, Susanna, and the Countess conspire to embarrass the Count and expose his infidelity. Meanwhile Figaro is caught up in a dispute with Bartolo and Marcellina. At night, all find themselves on the palace grounds, and comic series of cases of mistaken identity results in the Count's humiliation and the forgiveness by the Countess.

World Press Photo 2008 in Buenos Aires

Every year, following the World Press Photo Contest, the winning images go on show around 80 cities worldwide, starting in Amsterdam as part of the prize-giving ceremony in April, until March the following year. This year's exhibition comprises 185 images, that were selected by an international, independent jury from a total of 80536 that entered the contest. During November they will be presented in Buenos Aires, at Centro Cultural Borges, sponsored by the Royal Netherlands Embassy in Argentina.
Since 1995, the Dutch organization World Press Photo offers international support to new photo journalists. The World Press Photo Exhibition is the best known of World Press Photo's activities.
The annual World Press Photo contest offers an overview of the way press photographers approach their work, bringing together pictures from all parts of the globe to reflect trends and developments in photojournalism.

Last edition of Wine Tour Urbano Palermo 2008

Wine Tour Urbano, the wine tasting held in fashion and interior design shops, presents its last edition of 2008 on Friday, November 21st from 7 PM, in the trendy neighborhood of Palermo Soho.
More than 10 labels will participate in the event, presenting their best products that will be served by their sommeliers. In addition, Alimentactika will offer its "jellied wines", the biggest hit on the previous date.
Wine Tour Urbano will also be introducing Luis Casanovas, the only artist who paints with wine. This new technique will be used to create the Wine Tour picture, using the participating wines to capture the spirit of the event.
The wineries that will present their products, mainly from Mendoza, are: Las Perdices, Fincas Flichman, Bodegas del Desierto, Weinert, Estancia Mendoza, Nómade, Misterio, among others, and Colomé from Salta, Xumec from San Juan, and Familia Schroeder from Neuquen. The shops where the tastings will take place are: Tosone, Setuá, Kisuwen, Reset, Vivendi, Hábito, Mawa Travel, Rosh, De Vanguardia, Eger.
Wine Tour Urbano will cover Malabia Street between El Salvador and Honduras, from 7 PM to 10 PM. To participate, visitors have to purchase an Italian crystal glass ($ 45 Pesos) that can be used for unlimited tastings.

"Collectibles and Collectors" exhibition at Decorative Arts Museum

The purpose of the exhibition "Collectibles and Collectors" (Coleccionables y Coleccionistas) is to generate in the public the appreciation of decorative objects which beauty lays both in the harmony of its forms as in its integration with the environment.

The National Museum of Decorative Arts will present dancing cards from the collection of Mrs Josefina de Alvear de Errázuriz, former owner of the residence; from the collection Torre Bertucci, English and French perfume dispensers from the XIX century; French and Swiss pocket watches from the XIX century; antique hand held fans; French bronze pendulums from the XVII to the XX centuries; Meissen porcelain monkey figures from the XIX century; Chinese hard rocks; Christ and Good Shepherd ivory carvings made in Goa (India) in the XVII and XVIII centuries; English and French silver sieves; toy ships from the first half of XX century; antique carpentry tools; flippers and pin-balls from the 60s, 70s and 80s.

Like in the year 2006, the winning collections of the contest "MNAD Collecting Award 2008" will be presented. There will also be conferences and guided visits held to enrich the exhibition.
