Summer 2010: free cultural activities in Buenos Aires

The government of the City of Buenos Aires presents "Aires Buenos Aires - Cultura para respirar" (Culture to Breathe), a program of cultural activities that starts next Saturday, January 9th, 2010 consisting on over 300 free events, including: musical shows, drive-in movies, theater plays, activities for children, circus, open air "milongas", and numerous musical events, every day during January and February, 2010.
David Lebon, Catupecu Machu, Divididos, Pedro Aznar, Las Pelotas, Attaque 77, Los Auténticos Decadentes, Miranda!, Los Cafres, Bahiano, Luis Salinas, Juana Molina, Javier Malosetti, are some of the artists that will entertain the audiences with their shows.
The schedule includes over 300 free events in different neighborhoods around Buenos Aires: movies, theater plays, recitals at Parque Roca and Costanera Sur, popular "milongas" in parks around the city, children's shows, circus shows, painting workshops for kids at Pasaje Lanin, Julio Bocca's Ballet Argentino at the Amphitheater of Parque Centenario, among many others.
The drive-in will be set up at the Rose Garden, on Iraola & Sarmiento, Paseo de la Infanta, every Saturday and Sunday at 9:00 PM. There will also be stalls for spectators without a car. The first  showing will be "El Secreto de sus ojos", with Ricardo Darin, directed by Juan Jose Campanella.

The closing of the activities will be on February 20th, 7 pm, with a tango show celebrating Mariano Mores at the Obelisk.

ArtFutura Buenos Aires - Second edition 2009


ArtFutura, the festival of Digital Culture and Creativity of reference in Spain since 1990, arrives for the  second time in Buenos Aires. It will be held between November 5 and November 8, 2009, at MALBA.
ArtFutura has explored the most interesting projects and ideas that have come up on the international panorama of new media, interactive design, videogames and digital animation. Its activities include conferences, workshops, interactive installations, exhibitions and live performances.
ArtFutura’s Audiovisual Program will be presented in twelve Spanish cities simultaneously: Alicante, Barcelona, Cadiz, Gijon, Granada, Madrid, Murcia, Palma de Mallorca, Pamplona-Huarte, Valladolid, Vigo and Zaragoza. And this year, ArtFutura’s program will also be presented in the MALBA Museum in Buenos Aires in November.
As every year, ArtFutura’s Audiovisual Program 2009 will explore the projects and the most important ideas that have appeared on the international panorama of design, videogames and digital animation. Among its programs: the new selections for the ArtFutura Show and 3D in Spain, documentaries on the work of Chris Landreth, PES and Digital Kitchen, various retrospectives and two new sections: Reality Bytes (dedicated to new documentaries) and Futura Graphics (motion graphics and videoclips). The Dvein studios will present their projects for the first time in Argentina.

French Week in Buenos Aires

The French Week in Buenos Aires "Vivi Francia 2009" will take place from October 26 to November 4, 2009, organized by the French-Argentine Commerce and Industry Chamber (CCIFA), and sponsored by the French Embassy and the Ministry of Culture of the City of Buenos Aires. A series of activities to enjoy French culture, art, gastronomy, fashion, music and architecture, free and open to all, including guided visits to French buildings in Buenos Aires, a movie festival at Alliance Francaise, make-up and fashion shows, art exhibitions, and a gastronomic festival.

Banff Mountain Film Festival Argentina 2009

The best adventure film festival in the world, Banff Mountain Film Festival, arrives in Buenos Aires for the ninth time as part of its World Tour, with spectacular films about mountaineering, nature, and extreme sports, from countries like Norway, Germany, United States, and Canada, among others.

As a new feature this year, a series of conferences will be held before the movie screenings. Great Argentine adventurers and mountain men, like Sebastián Cura, Guillermo Glass and Christian Vitry (Expedición Dhaulagiri 2008), Alfredo Barragán (Expedición Atlantis, El desafío a los imposibles), and Humberto Vázquez, with Martin Iglesias, from Expedición Bicentenario 2010, will share their experiences, adventures and projects. On September 21, 22, andl 23, at 6.00 pm, with free entrance.

The program combines 13 films, featuring great stories of daring sporstmen, surrounded by breathtaking natural landscapes. The last date, called "3ra Noche" is the National Festival of Adventure and Nature Cinema, presenting the best films in the field by Argentine directors.

The Banff Mountain Film Festival was created in 1976, in the Canadian town of Banff, when 450 people gathered to watch 10 movies. From then on the festival grew every year to screen the best pictures that capture the spirit of mountain and adventure culture. The Festival´s World Tour began 15 years ago, and it was presented for the first time in Argentina in 2001.

Star Wars The Exhibition Argentina


For the first time in Argentina, Star Wars fans will have the opportunity to live a unique experience: Star Wars The Exhibition, starting July 2, 2009 until September 13, 2009, at Centro Cultural Recoleta.
Star Wars The Exhibition Argentina features over 200 original objects, costumes, props, drawings, vehicles and models from the Star Wars movies. These objects give visitors a rare glimpse into the making of the epic saga.
Some of the life-sized featured items are:
Space ships: “Jedi Starfighter”; “Anakin Skywalker´s Podracer”; “Imperial Speeder Bike”; “Anakin´s Airspeeder”.
Models: "Millennium Falcon"; "Imperial Star Destroyer".
The exhibition features nine different rooms to recreate the atmosphere of each particular world, along with several interactive activities that range from Jedi training to a green screen simulation which puts visitors right into the films.
At the Jedi School, kids will be trained by Jedi Masters to learn how to use laser sabres to defeat the evil Darth Vader and Darth Sidious.

Youth Culture Festival Ciudad Emergente


The second edition of Ciudad Emergente, the Festival of the youth culture, will take place from Thursday 11 to Monday 15 June, 2009 at Centro Cultural Recoleta.

This Festival, organised by the Ministry of Culture of the Government of the City of Buenos Aires, presents the new expressions of the youth culture: rock, pop, street art, animation, poetry, cinema and digital art.

The activities in the festival include: fashion shows by the winners of the contest "Moda Emergente" (Emerging Fashion); events that combine poetry and music; street art (two murals that will be painted during the festival); hip hop and other dance style shows; movie screenings with a program related to national and international rock and roll; fashion and digital art exhibitions; chill out lounges.

Admission is free of charge for all the activities.

Free screening of Home on World Environment Day 2009


On the occasion of WORLD ENVIRONMENT DAY on June 5th 2009, HOME (The earth from above) will be the first movie ever to be released simultaneously on all media (Theatre, TV, DVD, and internet) across the 5 Continents.
World Environment Day aims to promote worldwide environmental awareness. It was established by the United Nations General Assembly in 1972 to mark the opening of the Stockholm Conference on the Human Environment.
Yann Arthus-Bertrand is a passionate artist and photographer, and an advocate of nature protection and sustainable development. His “Earth Seen from Above” series, an exhibit of large-scale aerial photography, went on to travel to cities around the world, including Buenos Aires; Presently, he has completed the full-length feature film, HOME, produced by Luc Besson. The global premier will be on World Environment Day, 5 June.
HOME was shot entirely from the sky in high definition, showing landscapes captured from a bird’s eye view above. This film calls for a new awareness, inviting the viewer to stop for a moment in order to look at our planet and realize how we treat her treasures and her beauty.
The Global Premiere on 5 June 2009 for World Environment Day features major screenings in exceptional metropolitan sites.
The free of charge outdoor screening in Buenos Aires will take place at 9.00 PM on a large screen set in Plaza Naciones Unidas, Figueroa Alcorta & Austria.

ArtFutura Buenos Aires 2009



ArtFutura, the festival of Digital Culture and Creativity of reference in Spain since 1990, arrives for the first time in Buenos Aires. It will be held between April 23 and April 26, 2009, at MALBA.
ArtFutura has explored the most interesting projects and ideas that have come up on the international panorama of new media, interactive design, videogames and digital animation. Its activities include conferences, workshops, interactive installations, exhibitions and live performances.
On Friday 24, the Argentine animation film in 3D "Big Bang" will be presented. It received the Special Prize to Technological Innovation Applied to Audio Visual Art at the 3rd CineCien Festival 2008. It's about a journey through time and space aboard the space ship Sigma, that invites to discover the origin of the Universe, the formation of the galaxies and the solar system.
The audio visual program also includes a special documentary about the exhibition “MáquinasyAlmas” (Machines and Souls), presented at Museum Reina Sofia in Madrid; the new selections of ArtFutura Show; Full Motion Theater; Demos+Intros and 3D in Spain, retrospective on the French school Supinfocom and Japanese animator Satoshi Tomioka, and an impressive documentary: “The Net” by Lutz Dammbeck.

BAFICI - 11th Buenos Aires International Festival of Independent Cinema

The eleventh edition of Buenos Aires Independent Film Festival (BAFICI) organized by the Ministry of Culture of the city of Buenos Aires, and directed by Sergio Wolf, will take place between March 25th and April 5th, 2009, with screenings at various venues around the city, featuring a total of 350 movies and short films.
Some of the titles that make up this year's program are: 35 shots of rhum, by renowned French director Claire Denis (Chocolat, Nénette et Boni, Beau travail); Filmefobia (Brazil, 2008) a movie about fears by filmmaker Kiko Goifman, who last year presented Handerson e as horas; Examined Life (Canada, 2008) by Astra Taylor, about present existence on a tour along the 5th Avenue; Shirin (Iran, 2008) by Abbas Kiarostami (Through the Olive Trees, A Taste of Cherry, Y The Wind Will Carry Us) presented at the 65th Venice Film Festival, a homage to Iranian women; the second film by Chilean director Sebastián Silva, La nana (Chile-Mexico, 2009) winner as best International Drama Film at the Sundance Festival; Une autre homme (2008) by Swiss director Lionel Baier , about the relation between a famous film critic and a novice in the medium; Milestones (United States, 1975) the documentary by Robert Kramer (Guns, À toute allure, Notre nazi) about writer Grace Paley and her particular vision on Vietnam war; Awaydays (United Kingdom, 2008) by Pat Holden based on the novel by Sampson's; Ponyo on the Cliff by the Sea (Japan, 2008) by animation master Hayao Miyazaki (Sen and the Mysterious Disappearance of Chihiro, Princess Mononoke, Howl's Moving Castle); and 16 memorias (Colombia, 2008) by Camilo Botero Jaramillo, a movie about the family films of the Posada Saldarriagas in Medellín, among many other titles. Free cultural activities during Spring in Buenos Aires

The Ministry of Culture of the city of Buenos Aires invites the public to participate in the over 250 free cultural and artistic activities of the program "Primavera Buenos Aires" (Buenos Aires Spring), that will be held between October 5 and December 13, 2008, including a concert by the worldwide famous Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra at 9 de Julio Avenue, on November 22.
For 11 weekends, parks, squares, and open air spaces in the city will be the setting of varied activities for adults and children, all of them free of charge, such as musical shows, tango, theater, puppets, story telling, magic shows, film screenings, poetry, etc.
There will also be a program of recitals at Parque Roca, urban music at the Greek Amphitheater in Puerto Madero, tango in Mataderos, and the tour of Orquesta de Tango and the City´s Symphonic Band around the different neighborhoods of Buenos Aires.

MEACVAD 08 -Euro American Cinema, Video and Digital Art Exhibition

The Euro American Cinema, Video and Digital Art Exhibition (Muestra Euroamericana de Cine, Video y Arte Digital - MEACVAD) is an annual meeting organized by Alliance Francaise Argentina, Goethe-Institut, and Espacio Fundacion Telefonica, with the support of foreign delegations, universities, and national institutions. During a whole week of activities, performers, directors, theorists, and academicians in visual arts showcase their author-based movies, documentaries, experimental videos and interactive visual arts, to debate about the present status of audiovisual arts and media.
The 2008 edition of MEACVAD focuses on the digital era: digital cinema, online TV, web art, VJs, live events, video games, and cell phones, as means of hyper media production.
Invited guests from America and Europe will converge for a week in Buenos Aires to present their material, showcase their works, offer seminars, and set out a debate about the audiovisual arts, the artistic practices, and the current state of technological transition. MEACVAD presents this year two new publications: "La era Post Analógica", a compilation of the minutes of the event, and "Entre Imágenes", by Raymond Bellour.

The Director's Fortnight (Quinzaine des réalisateurs) in Buenos Aires

On Wednesday, September 17th, 2008, Olivier Père, artistic director of the "Quinzaine des réalisateurs" (The Director's Fortnight), will be presenting this showcase, one of the most important events in the calendar of international festivals, composed of 44 films that account for the richness, risk and diversity of movie making.
The Quinzaine, which this year celebrates its 40th anniversary, was born amid the political and cultural turmoil of May of '68, and from then on it keeps endorsing the free, independent, cinema, that goes beyond labels and frontiers.
This event is sponsored by: French Emabssy, Goethe-Institut, Cinémathèque Française, Austrian Film Commission, Cultural and Informative Center of the Embassy of Japan, and the Embassies of Austria, México and Portugal.

Banff Mountain Film Festival Argentina '08

The best adventure film festival in the world, Banff Mountain Film Festival, arrives in Buenos Aires for the eighth time as part of its World Tour, with spectacular films about mountaineering, nature, and extreme sports, from countries like Norway, Germany, United States, and Canada, among others.

The program combines 13 short videos and films, featuring great stories of daring sporstmen, surrounded by breathtaking natural landscapes. The Banff Mountain Film Festival was created in 1976, in the Canadian town of Banff, when 450 people gathered to watch 10 movies. From then on the festival grew every year to screen the best pictures that capture the spirit of mountain and adventure culture. The Festival´s World Tour began 15 years ago, and it was presented for the first time in Argentina in 2001.
