Malba - Museo de Arte Latinoamericano de Buenos Aires (Latin American Art Museum)

Malba - Museo de Arte Latinoamericano de Buenos Aires (Latin American Art Museum) is one of the newest museums in Buenos Aires. It opened its doors in September 2001. Malba is a non-profit institution featuring the private art collection of Argentine entrepreneur Eduardo Costantini. Since 1990, his collection was open for the consideration of local and international specialists, and lent for Latin American art exhibitions around Latin America and Europe.

In 1998 the construction of a new building to hold the collection began, after the selection of a project by Argentine architects Gastón Atelman, Martín Fourcade and Alfredo Tapia from an international call by the International Union of Architects.

The Costantini Collection consists of a selection of more than two hundred works, including drawings, paintings, sculptures and objects by 78 artists from Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, Costa Rica, Cuba, Chile, Ecuador, Mexico, Uruguay and Venezuela. Some of the featured artists are: Frida Kahlo, Wifredo Lam, Roberto Matta, Diego Rivera, Joaquín Torres-García, Antonio Berni, Emiliano Di Cavalcanti, Jorge de la Vega, Tarsila do Amaral, Pedro Figari, Lygia Clark, Helio Oiticica, Liliana Porter, Guillermo Kuitca and José Bedia Valdés, among others.

Besides the permanent collection, the museum features temporary exhibitions throughout the year, a movie theater with a daily program, a film library, an educational program with workshops and conferences for adults and children, and guided visits to the permanent and temporary exhibitions.

"La Gran Via de Mayo 2009" cultural festival

From April 24 through May 25 2009, the emblematic "Avenida de Mayo" will become an open air stage for Argentine and Hispanic culture. Neighbors and tourists alike will be able to enjoy the cultural festival "Gran Via de Mayo" in the heart of our city.
The program of activities, that will take place every weekend for a month (Saturdays from 3 pm and Sundays from 11 am) includes: free guided visits in Spanish and English around Plaza de Mayo, the Government Palace and Casa de la Cultura; activities and performances for children; Celtic music shows; free chorus and piano concerts at Casa de la Cultura; flamenco and tango shows at an open air stage; performances by the most renowned Tango houses in Buenos Aires (Tango Palace, El Viejo Almacen, Taconeando, La Ventana, El Querandi).
One of the most important events among the over 200 programmed activities, is "La Gran Milonga", that will take place on Sunday, May 10th, from 5 pm to 10 pm, when locals and visitors will have the opportunity to dance and enjoy tango dancing on the avenue.

International Show Jumping Competition "Sol de Mayo"

The annual show jumping competition Gran Premio Sol de Mayo will take place between May 14th and May 17th of 2009, at Club Hipico Argentino, with the participation of the best national and international riders. This is one of the most important tournaments of the annual show jumping calendar in Argentina.

The main event, "Gran Premio Sol de Mayo" (1.5 m) will take place on Sunday, May 17th, from 2 pm. There will be activities for the whole family, like the presence of the "Granaderos" band, and vaulting exhibitions.

Mozarteum Argentino presents concerts by Orchestre de la Suisse Romande

Mozarteum Argentino, a private non-profit institution promoter of musical culture both in Argentina and South America, presents the second event of its 2009 season, consisting of two concerts by Orchestre de la Suisse Romande at Teatro Coliseo, on May 7 and 8, 2009.
Founded in 1918 by Ernest Ansermet (Vevey, Switzerland), this orchestra, with 112 musicians, has toured all Europe and America and is well-known for its exact rendering of difficult modern music. Since its creation the world famous Orchestre de la Suisse Romande has discovered and supported contemporary composers, premiering their works in Geneva (Benjamin Britten, Claude Debussy, Peter Eötvös, Heinz Holliger, Arthur Honegger, Michael Jarrell, Frank Martin, Darius Milhaud, or Igor Stravinsky). The Orchestra has performed over twenty world premieres since 2000, in collaboration with Radio Suisse Romande.
The OSR has toured the world, performing in the most famous concert halls and at major festivals in Europe, and will be on tour in South America from 4 to 10 May 2009.

Marek Janowski has been Artistic Director of the Rundfunk-Sinfonieorchester Berlin since 2002 and in 2005 he was also appointed Musical Director of the Orchestre de la Suisse Romande in Geneva.

International Museum Day

Homage to Israel in its 61st Anniversary

The city of Buenos Aires will join the celebrations for the 61st Anniversary of the creation of the State of Israel with an artistic and cultural event that will take place on Sunday, May 17, 2009, at the corner of Avenida de Mayo and Bolivar, facing the Buenos Aires City Governement Building.
This event is part of a program of festivities destined to pay homage to the different communities present in the city, that will be carried out throughout the year.
The event will start at 3.00 pm and last until 6.00 pm, on an open air stage where musical shows and Israeli dance groups will be presented, and visitors will also be able to enjoy exhibitions of Jewish gastronomy and crafts, among other activities.

Mathematics Festival "Matbaires 09"

Matbaires 09, the first festival dedicated to Mathematics, will take place between May 7 and May 10, 2009, at Centro Cultural Recoleta, with a program that combines learning with entertainment.
The festival will feature special activities with renowned national and international mathematicians, open conferences, challenges, shows, board games, and talks with the public.
One of the invited guests is Gregory Chaitin, a renowned Argentine-American scientist specialized in the algorithmic information theory, who will offer the inaugural conference on May 7 ‘Paradojas del Azar’ (The Paradox of Randomness).
Luis Caffarelli, one of the most prestigious mathematicians worldwide, professor at Texas University, will offer a conference about one of the most famous unsolved problems in mathematics. Another renowned participant is Marco Avellaneda, Director of Financial Mathematics at Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences, New York University. John Allen Paulos, mathematician and book author, will present the closing conference "Un matemático lee el periódico" (A mathematician reads the newspaper), about the important relationship between mathematics and news in the press.
Throughout the festival, an exhibition of murals will show mathematics from different angles, and an art gallery will feature works by Alexander Holroyd and María Arroupe, projections of the works by Mariano Sardón, and a computer graphics section named "Math in Movement".
Two international artists have also been invited to the Festival: Argentine dancer Edgardo Mercado and French artist-juggler Adrien Mondot, who will present their shows "Falsas notas y caídas de bolas" (FNCB) and "Tierra de Mandelbrot", which relate to maths in a very original way, followed by talks with the audience.
Other shows are "Matemagia", by Leonardo di Rocco, and the musical comedy " La geometría y el asesinato en el Mathematics Express".
There will also be a cinema series of documentaries, shorts and movies with themes related to mathematics, like "A beautiful mind" and "Moebious", followed by discussions about the subject.
On Saturday, May 9, within the Festival, the great May Maths Olympiad, and the Argentine Mathematical Olympiad will take place, for children up to 15 years of age.
The mathematical contents of the Festival have been devised by the Mathematics Department of the School of Natural and Applied Sciences, University of Buenos Aires.
All the shows and activities are free, with entrance limited to the capacity of the rooms.

35th Buenos Aires International Book Fair

The Buenos Aires International Book Fair is the largest of its kind in the Spanish speaking world. It is considered as one of the most important cultural and editorial events in Latin America, and as a meeting point for authors, editors, book sellers, distributors, teachers, librarians, scientists, and over 1,200,000 readers from around the world. Just as in last year's edition, the Fair will occupy the whole of the 45,000 sqm of La Rural exhibition complex, in its "Ocre", "Azul", "Verde", "Amarillo", "Rojo", "Blanco", and Nº 9 pavilions. The Fair features conferences, round-tables, talks with prestigious national and international intellectuals, book presentations, shows, activities for children and teenagers, events for specialists and publishing professionals, and book sales of literature in all languages.

The special activities this year include: a Book Reading Marathon; the 4th International Poetry Festival; the International Meeting "Thinking democracy"; a Story-telling meeting; free courses and workshops.

One of the outstanding features of the Fair is the participation of internationally renowned authors. Some of the intellectuals that have confirmed their presence this year are: Swedish writer Henning Mankell; Italian pedagogue Francesco Tonucci; Dominican writer Junot Díaz (winner of the Pulitzer Prize 2008); Argentine philosopher Néstor García Canclini; French writer Michel Lafon; Spaniard writer and journalist Juan José Millás, ansd American philosopher Judith Butler; among others.

There's a special sector for children between 4 and 12 years of age, with activities like story telling, a children's library, and a playground. For teenagers between 12 and 18, talks, conferences, courses and presentations, related this year to the "International Year of Astronomy"

Japanese designer Kenzo opens art exhibition in Buenos Aires

The world famous Japanese artist and designer, Kenzo Takada, opened his art exhibition in Buenos Aires, the first one featuring his plastic work in Latin America, at the new art gallery Lordi Arte Contemporaneo, in San Telmo - Venezuela 617 - in a new turn of his artistic career.
This is his third art exhibition, composed of paintings, sculptures and collages, that have already been exhibited in Munich and Morocco.
His paintings, some of them in large dimensions, show in their majority women among pieces of cloth and stamps, colorful sculptures, figurines, an ode to the four seasons (four large paintings featuring different garments, according to every season), and even an homage to Buenos Aires with a painting featuring a couple dancing tango with the Obelisk in the background.
Kenzo's exhibition can be visited through July 10, 2009, Monday to Friday 11 am to 8 pm.

International Polo Tournament in Palermo

Festival Buen Dia 2009

Festival Buen Día, a cultural event for independent contemporary art that takes place since 1999, will be held on Saturday, April 25, 2009, at the Planetarium Galileo Galilei, Av. Figueroa Alcorta & Sarmiento, from 12 noon till midnight. All the events are free of charge.
Festival Buen Dia was created to bring together, in one day and in a public open air space, bands and solo Argentine singers, DJs, and a fair of independent cultural products.
This year the festival celebrates its tenth anniversary with the participation of musicians, over 100 designers in fashion, objects, games and toys, national editorials, specialized magazines, record labels, plastic arts and special activities.
The bands confirmed at the moment are Fantasmagoria, Michael Mike, Los Labios, Good Times For Dynacom, Gabi Vex, Lucio Mantel, Posavasos, The Flowers Orchestra and Rusia.

Festival Buenos Aires Earth Day 2009

On Saturday April 25th, 2009, for the second time Buenos Aires will join the world wide Earth Day celebration, an international event celebrated annually since 1970, that gathers millions of people around the globe in a "Call for climate".

The artists that will participate this year in Buenos Aires are: Lisandro Aristimuño, Axel Krygier, Los Natas, Nairobi and Martín Buscaglia, among others.

Other programmed activities are: screenings, video art, sustainable design, organic food stands, "Save the planet", a 3D movie for children about the global warming, theater and yoga.

Date: Saturday April 25th, 2009. From 1 pm till dawn. The event is not suspended in case of rain.
Location: Ave Figueroa Alcorta and Austria. Plaza Naciones Unidas (The Flower).

Mozarteum Argentino presents concerts by Orchestre des Champs-Élysées

Mozarteum Argentino, a private non-profit institution promoter of musical culture both in Argentina and South America, inaugurates its 2009 Season at Teatro Coliseo, presenting the Orchestre des Champs-Élysées, conducted by the well-known Belgian conductor Philippe Herreweghe, with a program consisting of two works by Hector Berlioz:Symphonie fantastique” (Episode de la Vie d’un Artiste) Op. 14 and “Lelio, ou Le Retour à la Vie” Op. 14 bis.

With lights and video installation, actor, soloists and dancers, this semi-staged version is a big event, featuring actor Marcial Di Fonzo Bo, singers Pierre-Yves Pruvot (baritone) and Robert Getchell (tenor), and Grupo de Canto Coral directed by Néstor Andrenacci. This is the first time in Argentina that this program will be presented using instruments which existed during the composer’s lifetime.

The Orchestre des Champs-Élysées dedicates its performances to music composed during the mid-XVIIIth to early XXth centuries. The orchestra has been in residence for several years at the Théâtre des Champs-Elysées in Paris and the Palais des Beaux-Arts in Brussels, performing in almost all the major European concert-halls, such as the Musikverein (Vienna), Alte Oper (Frankfurt), Philharmonic Halls in Berlin and Munich, Gewandhaus (Leipzig), Lincoln Center (New York), and touring Japan, Korea, China and Australia.

ArtFutura Buenos Aires 2009

ArtFutura, the festival of Digital Culture and Creativity of reference in Spain since 1990, arrives for the first time in Buenos Aires. It will be held between April 23 and April 26, 2009, at MALBA.
ArtFutura has explored the most interesting projects and ideas that have come up on the international panorama of new media, interactive design, videogames and digital animation. Its activities include conferences, workshops, interactive installations, exhibitions and live performances.
On Friday 24, the Argentine animation film in 3D "Big Bang" will be presented. It received the Special Prize to Technological Innovation Applied to Audio Visual Art at the 3rd CineCien Festival 2008. It's about a journey through time and space aboard the space ship Sigma, that invites to discover the origin of the Universe, the formation of the galaxies and the solar system.
The audio visual program also includes a special documentary about the exhibition “MáquinasyAlmas” (Machines and Souls), presented at Museum Reina Sofia in Madrid; the new selections of ArtFutura Show; Full Motion Theater; Demos+Intros and 3D in Spain, retrospective on the French school Supinfocom and Japanese animator Satoshi Tomioka, and an impressive documentary: “The Net” by Lutz Dammbeck.

Gallery Nights: First edition of 2009

On Friday, April 29th, 2009, from 7 PM, the first edition of Gallery Nights 2009, the original circuit for art lovers around more than 60 art galleries, antique shops, museums and cultural centers, will take place in the neighborhoods of Retiro and Barrio Norte in Buenos Aires. Gallery Nights is organized by the art magazine Arte al Día, AdnCultura (La Nacion newspaper), and the Ministry of Culture of the City of Buenos Aires, the last Friday of every month.

As always, there will be live music and free shows, and guests will be welcomed with a complimentary glass of Chandon champagne. A free “LAN Audio Guide Tour”, is available (in Spanish only). Those who wish to participate in this virtual experience can get to the LAN stand at the British Arts Centre (Suipacha 1333), from 7 PM to 10 PM, and, with an ID, will be able to pick up an MP3 with the information about the galleries and exhibits chosen. This information can also be downloaded from www.artealdia.com to make the visit with your own MP3.

The recommended exhibitions this month are: Gyula Kosice "Obras Recientes" at Zurbaran; the engravings' exhibition “+ Estampa” at Mundo Nuevo Gallery Art; paintings by Felipe Giménez at Casasur Art Hotel; paintings by Francisco Travieso at Palatina; and the colective exhibition at Aldo De Sousa with artists like Ernesto Berra, Daniel Zelaya, Karin Godnic, Pablo Solari, Juan Ranieri, Hernán Dompé and Alberto Bastón Díaz.

A new addition to Gallery Nights this year is the presentation of “Iluminarte by Arnet”, featuring Argentine video art at the Auditorium of British Arts Centre (Suipacha 1333, Buenos Aires). Rodrigo Alonso, a permanent collaborator in Arte al Dia, is in charge of the selection of the artists presenting their works.

The traditional circuit of Gallery Nights covers from Plaza San Martín to Callao and from Tucumán to Libertador. There is also a free transportation service with fixed stops and a constant route to get to all of the spots in the circuit.

Ciudanza - 2nd Festival of Dance in Urban Landscapes

On April 18, 19, 25 and 26, 2009, organized by the Ministry of Culture of the City of Buenos Aires, visitors and locals are invited to enjoy the dance festival "Ciudanza".
Ciudanza is part of an innovative program, “Ciudades que danzan” (Dancing Cities), an international network of festival with a program of contemporary dance shows in urban landscapes, existing in South America and Europe, in cities like Barcelona, Lisbon, Bologna, London and La Habana, among others.
"Ciudades que danzan" is the union of architecture, contemporary dance, and the public, opening a new vision of the artistic and cultural heritage of the city. Thorugh the language of dance, people passing by learn to look at a place, a street, a corner in a different way, rediscovering it.
For this edition of the festival in Buenos Aires the spaces where the performances will take place are Parque Centenario, Parque Mujeres Argentinas and Parque Tres de Febrero, giving a new value to public space through cultural activities.

Pecha Kucha Night Buenos Aires Vol. 12

On Tuesday, April 28, 2009, Ciudad Cultural Konex presents the twelfth edition of Pecha Kucha Night, a “showcasing + networking” event created in Japan in 2003 by architects Astrid Klein and Mark Dytham, in which 12-15 creators from different disciplines have 6 minutes and 40 seconds each to show an idea or project, through 20 images screened for 20 seconds. Once the presentations are finished, the guest artists get together to exchange their opinions, and the public is invited to enjoy some music and conversation.

Moscow Symphony Orchestra Gala concert

The 5th Ushuaia International Music Festival, which will be taking place from April 25th to May 9th, 2009 in that city, will offer a special Gala in Buenos Aires by the Moscow Symphony Orchestra at Teatro Coliseo (Marcelo T. de Alvear 1125), on Thursday April 23rd, 2009, 8.30 PM.
This presentation is part of the Ushuaia International Festival, the world's southernmost classical music festival that takes place every year at Las Hayas Resort Hotel.
The Moscow Symphony Orchestra will be conducted by Maestro JORGE ULIARTE (Argentina/Austria), co-founder of the Festival, Artistic Director and Orchestra Conductor of the Berlin Symphonic Orchestra. As in the last edition, the high talented PABLO DZODAN from Buenos Aires/Argentina will participate as guest conductor.
