Third Worldwide Klezmer Festival in Argentina

The Third Worldwide Klezmer Festival will take place in Buenos Aires from October 18th to October 23rd, 2010, with the participation of artists, bands and orchestras from Canada, Chile, Romania, and Argentina, among other countries
The purpose of this event is to spread this music genre admired by different audiences around the globe, which goes beyond frontiers and languages, and to show this European culture and its traditions to the audience through this lively, catchy, and energetic music.
Klezmer is the music of the Yiddish culture. Yiddish is the language spoken by the large European-Jewish Community, extended within a wide area of Central and Eastern Europe during the Second Millennium; from Germany to Russia and the Baltic Sea to the Black Sea.
Originally, klezmer (plural klezmorim) referred to the musical instruments used to play this music; however, it was later extended to refer to both the genre and musicians, who are now called kleyzmorim.
After being absent for several decades, at the end of the '70s, Klezmer Music started to be appreciated again; especially as non-Jewish jazz musicians, such as Don Byron, started to perform it. Don Byron is a famous clarinetist, who is part of the worldwide renowned Klezmer Conservatory Band, an orchestra which is an example of the rebirth of Klezmer.
This "Rebirth" of the Klezmer Music quickly spread in the US and Europe, resulting in the formation of many multicultural orchestras in the '80s and '90s. In Argentina there was also a similar phenomenon, yet quite later. Several bands of Klezmer Music have been formed especially in the city of Buenos Aires over the last three years.

The schedule includes free open air concerts to be presented on Calle Florida near Plaza San Martin at  noon and "after office" (6.30pm to 8.30pm) every day of the Festival.
A Klezmer Gala will be held at Theatre Presidente Alvear, Corrientes 1659, on Tuesday, October 19th, 8.30pm, and another Gala at Amijai,, Arribeños 2355, Belgrano, on Thursday 21st, 8.30pm.
A "Jam Session" will take place on Thursday 21st, at the Amphitheater of Parque Centenario, 7.30pm. Entrance: $ 10 Pesos.

The closing of the Festival "Concert for Peace" will be on Saturday, October 23, at the Planetarium, at 7.00pm, with free entrance (in case of rain it will be postponed to Sunday 24, same time).

For more information and complete schedule, visit Klezmer Fiesta, the festival's official website.

The magnificent Lapacho Rosado has bloomed once again

This is one of the most famous trees in Buenos Aires. It's a "lapacho rosado" (Tabebuia impetiginosa), a tree native from the North-West of Argentina. This splendid specimen, popularly known as the "Lapacho de Ezcurra", was planted by landscaper Martin Ezcurra on the corner of Ave. Figueroa Alcorta and Mariscal Castilla, in Palermo Chico, and every year announces the arrival of Spring with an explosion of pink flowers.

There are many other specimens in Buenos Aires, like these in Plaza Italia:

But the one on Figueroa Alcorta Av. is the most spectacular of all. This ephemeral spectacle lasts only a few days, so those who are in Buenos Aires make sure not to miss it.
