Chinese and Japanese communities in Buenos Aires also celebrate the Bicentennial of Argentina

The Chinese and the Japanese communities in Buenos Aires have both organized their celebrations to honor Argentina, their adopted homeland, for the Bicentenary of its First National Government. Both celebrations will take place on Sunday May 16, 2010.

Starting at 11:00 am at the Barrio Chino in Belgrano (Arribeños and Olazabal), organized by the Buenos Aires Chinatown Association, Argentina Buddhist Association I.B.P.S, and the For Guang Shan Buddhist Monastery Argentina, the ceremony will reflect the love of all members of the Chinese community for Argentina.
A fundamental part of the event will be the ceremony of the Vesak, also known as the Bath of the Buddha. This important ceremony commemorating the birth of Sakyamuri Buddha (Siddhartha Gautama) 2554 years ago will include an invocation for the future of Argentina and its people.
The idea is to use bath water to clean our own Buddha within, that is, to purify the body and mind by the washing of Buddha. It is also a reminder that we must always keep a pure mind.
The celebrations in the streets of Chinatown in Belgrano will also include the classic act of the dragon and a great show with the best of oriental cuisine and handicrafts both Argentine and Chinese.

The Artistic Japanese Grand Parade "Buenos Aires celebra Japon" will take place on the same day on Avenida de Mayo, between Bolivar and Tacuari, from 2 pm to 4 pm.
Groups of Taiko (Japanese drums) from various provinces, groups of Japanese and Okinawan dance, and Karate schools will participate in a colorful parade.

The event is organized by the Government of the City of Buenos Aires, the Embassy of Japan in Argentina, the Nikkei Federation in Argentina (FANA), Kyoren and Okiren.

Mega Show for the Reopening of Teatro Colon

A mega show will dazzle locals and visitors on May 24, 2010, for the Reopening of Teatro Colón, that will take place at 7 pm, before the Reopening Gala, and as part of the celebrations of the Bicentennial.

With a system never performed in Argentina, nine state-of-the-art projectors will create a film on the facade of the building with three-dimensional images and effects relating to the theater, its history and the cultural figures who performed on its stages. People will be able to watch an emotional audiovisual tribute by characters simulating interactions with ballet dancers, opera singers and musicians from the theater's companies.

The screening, known as Mapping Projection, will last for 45 minutes and will be performed on the facade on Cerrito Street (Avenida 9 de Julio), on which a large stage will be put up, and where different shows will be performed.

According to the project's technicians: "It will be an amazing show with the most innovative technology in the world. Each of the major protagonists from different disciplines will be honored and everything will be combined with poetry, great authors, stable companies, acrobats and other performers, as well as an evocation of the history of the Theater and how it has been recovered for the people".

They will travel to Europe to film personalities such as Placido Domingo, Montserrat Caballé, Maia Mikhailovna Plisétskaia and Daniel Barenboim, among others, to participate in the event.

After the show, people will be able to watch the Reopening Gala on large screens that will be placed on Libertad Steet.

Cirque du Soleil presents Quidam in Buenos Aires

After the success of its shows Saltimbanco and Alegria, with over 350,000 spectators, Cirque du Soleil, the world famous circus company, is back in Buenos Aires presenting its spectacular show "Quidam", starting May 29, 2010.

About Quidam: a nameless passer-by, a solitary figure lingering on a street corner, a person rushing past. It could be anyone, anybody. Someone coming, going, living in our anonymous society. A member of the crowd, one of the silent majority. The one who cries out, sings and dreams within us all. This is the "quidam" that Cirque du Soleil is celebrating.
A young girl fumes; she has already seen everything there is to see, and her world has lost all meaning. Her anger shatters her little world, and she finds herself in the universe of Quidam. She is joined by a joyful companion as well as another character, more mysterious, who will attempt to seduce her with the marvelous, the unsettling, and the terrifying.

Festival de Otoño - Music of the World in Buenos Aires

Between April 16 and 29, 2010, a new Festival will be presented in Buenos Aires: Festival de Otoño 2010, featuring 16 concerts in four scenarios that will bring together 10 of the most outstanding artists from across the globe, from different genres and cultures:
Diego el Cigala will present a repertoire of tangos, accompanied by Juanjo Domínguez, Néstor Marconi and Andres Calamaro and Ruben Juarez as invited guests; Goran Bregovic Wedding and Funeral Band, once again bringing its Balkan sounds to Buenos Aires; The Klezmaticz, from United States, the most prominent klezmer band in the world; Chango Spasiuk, invited local artist who will open the festival; the Portuguese Misia, who will present her new show and CD, "Ruas", with her personal vision of Fado; the Irish music and choreography group Celtic Legends; the Portuguese-Mozambican Maria Joao, who together with pianist Mário Laginha will offer their new album, "Chocolate", a blend of African and Portuguese music, jazz and other influences, a style that made the singer famous; the French multi-ethnic group Tryo, composed of musicians from different countries with varied influences; the new revelation of modern flamenco, singer Arcángel, from Huelva, which among many other awards, was elected Best Male "cantaor" in 2009; and Tabaré Cardozo, perhaps the most original artists of the new street murga and its mixtures with rock and other sounds.
