The West-Eastern Divan Orchestra
In 1999, Daniel
Barenboim and Palestinian intellectual Edward Said, who died in 2003,
established a workshop for young musicians from Israel, Palestine and
other Middle Eastern Arab countries with the aim of promoting
coexistence and intercultural dialogue.
The orchestra got its
name from a collection of poems by the writer Johann Wolfgang von
Goethe called "West-Eastern Divan", a reference work for the
development of the concept of global culture.
