Historic photo exhibit: Darwin in Argentina

Centro Cultural Borges presents the historic-photographic exhibition "Darwin in Argentina", honoring the renowned English scientist and his journey through Argentina. The year 2009 has been declared as the Darwin Year worldwide, in celebration of the bicentennial of Darwin's birthday, and sesquicentennial of publication of his book "The Origin of Species".
In 1831, at only 22, Darwin embarked as a naturalist on the H.M.S. Beagle commanded by Captain Fitz Roy on a 5-year journey around the world. Between 1833 and 1835 Darwin visited Argentina as part of that trip. He registered the customs of its inhabitants, the features of its flora and fauna, the fossils, and the geological aspects of our territory. These data were fundamental for the development of his theory of evolution.
The exhibition is organized in different themes: Darwin in Argentina; Darwin's journey through Patagonia; the Theory of Evolution; the Beagle; and a series of illustrations that depict the influence of Darwin's thoughts on other areas of culture.

Dates and opening times:
August 13 - September 9, 2009

The National Museum of Decorative Arts to host Treasures from the Louvre. Houdon's Sculptures

The National Museum of Decorative Arts, with the exceptional participation of The Louvre Museum and the support of the French Embassy in Argentina presents the exhibition "Treasures from the Louvre. Houdon's Sculptures", featuring 19 works by French sculptor Jean Antoine Houdon, considered as the best sculptor of his time for the vividness of his portraits.
Houdon is famous for his portrait busts and statues of philosophers, inventors and political French figures of the XVIII century, including Diderot, Rousseau, Mirabeau, Condorcet, Voltaire.
In 1785 Houdon was invited by Benjamín Franklin to portrait the then President George Washington. Washington sat for wet clay life models and a plaster life mask that served for many busts and statues, including a standing figure currently located in the Virginia State Capitol in Richmond.
The exhibit will feature not only portraits of historical figures, but also of Houdon's family members, French royals, and the singer Sophie Arnauld as Iphigénie at Gluck's Iphigénie in Aulide.
The exhibition will run between August 5 and September 27, 2009, and will be accompanied by guided visits, conferences by specialists, and concerts of fragments of French Baroque operas.
