Tango: City Dance Champhionship 2011

From May 4th to May 22nd, 2011, the City's Tango Dance Championship 2011 will be held in different "milongas", theaters, and open air locations across the city.
The competition is on the look out for new winning couples in the categories Salon Tango, Milonga and Waltz, who will qualify to participate in the World Tango Dance Championship that will take place in Buenos Aires in August 2011.
The Championship starts on May 4th at La Viruta. The qualifying rounds will continue until Sunday, May 15th at different clubs and milongas of the city, to arrive at semifinals on Wednesday 18 and Thursday 19 at La Viruta and El Pial. The final will be held on Saturday 21 at the picturesque colonial building of Colegio San José (Azcuénaga 158, Balvanera). And there will be a grand closing with an open air milonga, with a live orchestra and live exhibitions by the winners.

The main events are:
May 4th, 11:30pm: Opening of the Championship at La Viruta, Armenia 1366
May 7th, 6:00pm: Free Open Air Milonga at La Glorieta de Belgrano, 11 de Septiembre and Echeverria. In case of rain it will be moved to May 8th.
May 17th, 6:00pm: Special Milonga with free entrance at Centro Cultural Julian Centeya, Av. San Juan 158
May 21st, 8:00pm: Great Final at Colegio San José, Azcuénaga 158. Free tickets must be picked up on Friday, May 20th, from 12pm to 6pm, at Casa de la Cultura, Av. de Mayo 575.
May 22nd: Closing Milonga at San Juan and Boedo, with live orchestra and exhibitions. Free entrance. 

For the events that are not free of charge, tickets will be on sale at the respective venues.

Buenos Aires Hop-on Hop-off Bus

   

At the moment the city of Buenos Aires offers two Hop-on Hop-off bus services.
The yellow buses managed by the city's tourism office have been running since May 2009. Starting March 2020, a new red bus managed by the international company Grey Line has started operating in Buenos Aires, offering a new alternative route. 

On both services a specialized tour guide on board provides visitors with informative material about the city, and audio guide is available in Spanish, English, Portuguese, German, Chinese, Italian, Japanese, Russian, and French.
It’s a Hop-On/Hop-Off service, which means you can get on and off the bus as many times as you like.

YELLOW ROUTE
The yellow buses run every 40 - 50 minutes, depending on traffic, from Monday to Sunday, 9:00 am to 5:00 pm.

Recoleta (Av. Quintana & Ayacucho) - Teatro Colón - Avenida de Mayo - Plaza del Congreso - Paseo de la Historieta - Plaza Dorrego (San Telmo) - La Bombonera - Caminito (La Boca) - Parque Lezama - Puente de la Mujer -  Reserva Ecológica (Puerto Madero) - Galerías Pacífico (shopping mall) - Av. 9 de Julio - Plaza San Martín - Parque Thays - MALBA - Planetarium - Plaza Italia - Plaza Julio Cortázar - Distrito Arcos (shopping mall) - Palermo Parks - Monumento de los Españoles and Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes (Fine Arts Museum).

RED ROUTE 
The red buses run every day, every 30 minutes, depending on traffic.

Horse Racing: Gran Premio Republica Argentina 2011

One of the most important classics of the year, the "Gran Premio Republica Argentina" (GI), will take place on Sunday, May 1st, 2011, at Hipodromo Argentino de Palermo, Av. Libertador & Dorrego.
In this outstanding 2000-meter race compete the best 3 years old and older pure thoroughbred horses of the national and foreign equestrian activity. The Great Prize "Gran Premio Republica Argentina", at 5:30pm, will be the center of a spectacular journey that will start at 1:00 pm.
Other five big prizes (GI) are included: Great International Prize of the Americas, Breeders' Prize, Great International Prize of Buenos Aires City,  Great Prize Jorge de Atucha, and the Great Award Montevideo.
The Expo of the Provinces will be located in the center of the court.
A 3D mapping projection will be on display on the facade of the main entrance building from April 26th until the night of May 1st, featuring turf images, lights and special effects.

Solidarity event for the Japanese people affected by the tsunami




A solidarity event to help the victims of the earthquake in Japan, organizered by the Government of the City of Buenos Aires, the Nikkei Federation in Argentina (FANA) and the Okinawan Center in Argentina, will be held on Avenida de Mayo 500 (between Bolivar and Chacabuco), on Sunday April 17th, 2011, from 2:00 pm to 6:00 pm.

Artists from Argentina and the Japanese community will share an artistic encounter in a big stage with other diverse communities. There will be chairs for the audience to better appreciate the show. During the meeting FANA will receive voluntary donations in support of victims of the earthquake and tsunami that occurred in Japan last March 11, 2011.

The event will consist of:

  • Musical groups and choirs from the Japanese community.
  • Groups of Japanese drums (Taiko)
  • Artists from other communities
