2022 Tango Buenos Aires Festival and Tango Dance World Cup


The 2022 Tango Buenos Aires Festival and Tango Dance World Cup will be held between September 6th and September 18th, 2022,  featuring more than 200 shows and free activities including concerts and dance performances, popular "milongas", shows, conferences and clinics, exhibition and sale of products, dance classes in various levels and styles, and the competition for the Tango Dance World Cup, with the participation of the best couples of dancers from Argentina and the world. The World Cup Final event of the competition will be a fantastic open air event on a big stage at the Obelisco on Saturday, September 17th, at 4.00 pm.

Many other concerts will be held at different venues during the Festival, including cultural centers, notable bars and theaters. 

Throughout the World Tango Festival classes of different levels and styles will be given by renowned dancers and instructors from recognized schools, all free of charge.

TANGO DANCE WORLD CUP:
This is the celebration that makes Buenos Aires the mecca for tango dancers around the world. The event rewards the best couples in the Tango de Pista category, which stresses the social dance as a practice rooted in Buenos Aires, and Tango Escenario, which aims to enrich the dance from a choreographic point of view. Starting on Monday, August 12th, more than 500 couples from around the world measure their talents in this competition.

The qualifying rounds start on Friday 9th at 9 am at the Auditorium of Usina del Arte. On Friday 9th and Saturday 10th the competition is for Tango de Pista. On Sunday 11th and Monday 12th, Tango Escenario. Previous reservation is required.

On Tuesday 13th, at 6.00 pm, at the Auditorium of Usina del Arte, there will be a Gala with the participation of the National and International champions of the Preliminaries.

The Semifinals will take place at Usina del Arte. Tango de Pista: Wednesday 14th; Tango Escenario: Thursday 15th; both at 3.00 pm. Free tickets for this event will have to be reserved online in advance (see below).

The World Cup culminates in two major Finals: Tango de Pista on Tuesday 20th, and Tango Escenario on Saturday 17th at 4.00 pm, in a at Obelisco of Buenos Aires (Av. 9 de Julio & Av. Roque Saenz Peña)

Admission to all the activities and shows of the Tango Buenos Aires Festival and World Cup is free. Some require reservation and registration in advance. Tickets are available 72 hours previous to each event through the Festival's website.

2022 Buenos Aires City Tango Dance Championship


The 2022 Buenos Aires City Tango Dance Championship will be held at different "milongas" and cultural centers across the city from Thursday, May 12th through Sunday, May 22nd of  2022.

The competition is on the look out for new winning couples in the categories Tango de Pista, "Milongueros" of the World, Milonga and Waltz, who will qualify to participate in the World Tango Dance Championship that will take place in Buenos Aires in August 2022.

The cost of admittance to the Milongas depends on the entry the price set by each venue.

2020 Virtual World Tango Festival and World Tango Dance Competition

The highly anticipated World Tango Festival and World Tango Dance Competition adapt their formats this year to the current Covid-19 situation, so all of those who wish to participate can do it from their own homes and from anywhere in the world. The events will take place online from August 26th to August 30th through the Festival's website and social media. 

The call for the World Tango Dance Competition is open to dancers (single or in couples) over 18 years of age, of any nationality, for the categories Estilo Tango de Pista and Estilo Tango Escenario. The participation will be through a video recorded in the context of their homes and respecting the legal regulations in force for the pandemic at their respective cities. 

Submissions will be received between August 15th and August 22nd, 2020. In the category Estilo Tango de Pista, the Participants must dance to "Paciencia", by Juan D’ Arienzo and his orchestra with Alberto Echagüe. Only the version of the son on this link will be accepted. 
In the category Estilo Tango Escenario, the dancer or the couple can choose the theme to dance, which duration must not exceed four (4) minutes.

The registration is free for all, for both amateur and professional dancers, through this link.

A panel of experts will select the best 10 participants in Estilo Tango de Pista and the best 5 in Estilo Tango Escenario. On August 26th all the finalist will be announced on the Festival's website, and the public will be able to vote for their favorites until August 30th. The participants with more votes will be the winners of the Dance Championship.

The World Tango Festival will feature more than 200 online contents by renowned local artists, like Amelita Baltar, Juan Carlos Copes, José Colangelo, Walter Ríos, María Nieves and Nicolás Ledesma. The Opening will honor the Women of Tango. The Festival will also pay tribute to Astor Piazzolla, Mariano Mores, Aníbal Troilo and Osvaldo Pugliese, and to dancers such as Juan Carlos Copes, Los Dinzel, María Nieves, and Gloria Arquimbau. It will also celebrate the 100th anniversary of Argentine radio.

The classic Milongas and Dance Lessons will be offered in virtual format.

2019 Tango Buenos Aires Festival and Tango Dance World Cup


The 2019 Tango Buenos Aires Festival and Tango Dance World Cup will be held between August 8th and August 21st, 2019,  featuring more than 200 shows and free activities including concerts and dance performances, popular "milongas", shows, conferences and clinics, exhibition and sale of products, dance classes in various levels and styles, and the competition for the Tango Dance World Cup, with the participation of the best couples of dancers from Argentina and the world.

The Opening of the 2019 Festival will be on Thursday, August 8th at Centro Cultural 25 de Mayo, for the first time with a Musical Theater show, “Aquí cantó Gardel”, a play about the last time that Carlos Gardel performed in Buenos Aires, with the participation of Orquesta de Tango de la Ciudad de Buenos Aires.

The Closing concert will be on Monday, August 19th, at 9:00 pm, at the Auditoriom of Usina del Arte, with pianist and composer José Colangelo together with Franco Luciani, one of the most important harmonica players.  

Many other concerts will be held at different venues during the Festival, including cultural centers, notable bars and theaters. Throughout the World Tango Festival classes of different levels and styles will be given by renowned dancers and instructors from recognized schools, all free of charge.

One of the milestones of the Festival, Milonga del Salson Mayor, will take place every day at Usina del Arte, an open invitation to those that want to dance the traditional tango with invited DJs from different generations and musical styles. Other Milongas will take place at Cultural centers, for novices and experienced dancers alike.

Free entrance:
For the shows and activities in the rest of the venues and for the qualifying rounds of the Dance World Championship it is not necessary to reserve tickets in advance., admittance will be on a first come-first served basis until reaching the full capacity of each venue.

Finals at Luna Park:

The reserved tickets can be picked up on the day of the show from 12:00 pm at the box office of Luna Park Stadium. The locations will be assigned by arrival order. Reserved tickets will be valid until 30 minutes before the start of the show. After this they will be freed for the general public.

The 2019 Buenos Aires City Tango Dance Championship will be held at different "milongas" and cultural centers across the city from Wednesday, May 8th through Sunday, May 19th of  2019.

The competition is on the look out for new winning couples in the categories Tango de Pista, "Milongueros" of the World, and Waltz, who will qualify to participate in the World Tango Dance Championship that will take place in Buenos Aires in August 2019.

The Qualifying rounds start on May 8th at Centro Cultural Julián Centeya (Av. San Juan 3255), with free admission. From Thursday, May 9th the competition will continue with qualifying rounds every day at the different Milongas and Cultural Centers across the city.

La Gran Milonga Nacional 2018 - Open Air Tango Dancing



"La Gran Milonga Nacional", an open air event with live orchestras and street tango dancing along Avenida de Mayo, which is transformed for one night into a giant dance floor, will take place on Saturday, December 8th, 2018.

This fantastic event, which every year occupies the traditional Avenida de Mayo, from Plaza de Mayo to 9 de Julio Av. is organized by the National Tango Academy and the Association of Promoters of Tourism, Hotel Business and Gastronomy (APTHGRA), in honor of the National Tango Day which is celebrated on December 11th.

La Gran Milonga Nacional will start at 8:00 pm, and will last until 3 am, with three central stages in the corners of Avenida de Mayo with Bernardo de Irigoyen, Piedras and Perú, and other smaller ones along the avenue, where the audience will be able to dance on the street to the music of live Tango orchestras, with their dancers and singers, including the orchestras La Juan D´Arienzo, Los Herederos del Compás, “Típica De Angelis”, “Varela Tango”, “Piazzola Tango Show”, “Cuarteto Mulenga”, “Típica Suburbana” and “Canyengue”,

Free entrance. Suspended in case of rain.

2018 Tango Buenos Aires Festival and Tango Dance World Cup


The 2018 Tango Buenos Aires Festival and Tango Dance World Cup will be held between August 9th and August 22nd, 2018,  featuring more than 200 shows and free activities including concerts and dance performances, popular "milongas", shows, conferences and clinics, exhibition and sale of products, dance classes in various levels and styles, and the competition for the Tango Dance World Cup, with the participation of the best couples of dancers from Argentina and the world.

The Great Opening of the 2018 Festival will be on Thursday, August 9th at Usina del Arte, with a concert at 8.00 pm featuring maestro Néstor Marconi and the different generations of tango. Musicians of diverse ages will join the great artist on stage to play original arrangements for bandoneon duo, trio and quartet.

This year the Festival will celebrate Mariano Mores in the 100th anniversary of his birth with a concert by his grandson, Gabriel Mores. International artists that have embraced Tango in their countries will be present to perform at the Festival, coming from Belgium, Japan and Norway.

The semifinals will take place at Usina del Arte. Tango de Pista: Saturday 18th; Tango Escenario: Sunday 19th; both at 10.00 am. Free tickets have to be picked up 1 hour before the start of the show at the Information Stand.  A maximum of 2 (two) tickets will be available per person until venue capacity is reached.

The World Cup culminates in two major Finals: Tango de Pista on Tuesday 21st, and Tango Escenario on Wednesday 22nd, both at 7.00 pm, at Luna Park Stadium. Free tickets for these two events will be available for pick-up on Friday, August 17th from 11.00 am at Usina del Arte. 2 (two) tickets for each event will be given out per person until reaching the capacity of 10,000 seats.

Tickets for the shows at the Espacio Cultural Julián Centeya, Espacio Cultural Carlos Gardel, Espacio Cultural Adán Buenosayres, Espacio Cultural Resurgimiento, Pista Urbana, Teatro Monteviejo, Museo del Cine Pablo Ducrós Hicken, Museo Casa Carlos Gardel, Academia Nacional del Tango and Academia Porteña del Lunfardo can be picked up 1 hour before showtime at the venue’s Information Desk. A maximum of 1 (one) ticket will be available per person until venue capacity is reached.
For the Clinics at Sala de Cámara of Usina del Arte, no advance registration is required. Admission is with tickets that will be given out 1 (one) hour before start time at the Information Stand of Usina del Arte.
For Dance Classes that require advance registration, participants must register at buenosaires.gob.ar/festivales. They need to arrive 30 minutes before start time at the Information Desk of the Salón de Clases in Usina del Arte. Those who were unable to register in advance may put their name on a waiting list at the Information Desk and participate according to available places.

Buenos Aires City Tango Dance Championship 2018


The 2018 Buenos Aires City Tango Dance Championship will be held at different "milongas", theaters, and cultural centers across the city from Wednesday, May 9th through Sunday, May 20th of  2018.

The competition is on the look out for new winning couples in the categories Tango de Pista, "Milongueros" of the World, and Waltz, who will qualify to participate in the World Tango Dance Championship that will take place in Buenos Aires in August 2018.

The Qualifying rounds start on May 9th at Centro Cultural Julián Centeya (Av. San Juan 3255), with free admission, with the presentation of the singer Pablo Ramos and the orchestra Los Herederos del Compás. From Thursday, May 10th the competition will tour around the city: every day there will be qualifying rounds in the neighborhoods of Flores, Palermo, La Paternal, Boedo, Chacarita and Constitución. 

The Waltz and Milonga Semifinals will be held on Friday, May 18th at 6.00 pm; the Tango de Pista and Milongueros of the World Semifinals will be on Saturday, May 19th, at 6.00 pm at Usina del Arte (Caffarena 1, La Boca), with free admission to the public. Free tickets must be picked up 2 hours before the start of each event.

The Grand Final will take place on Sunday, May 20th, at 6.00 pm, also at the iconic building of Usina del Arte, in La Boca. The free tickets for the Final have to be picked up at Usina del Arte from 4.00 pm on the same day.

2017 Tango Buenos Aires Festival and Tango Dance World Cup


The 2017 Tango Buenos Aires Festival and Tango Dance World Cup, organized by the Ministry of Culture of Buenos Aires, will be held between August 10th and August 23rd, 2017,  featuring more than 200 shows and free activities including concerts and dance performances, popular "milongas", shows, conferences and clinics, exhibition and sale of products, dance classes in various levels and styles, and the competition for the Tango Dance World Cup, in which the best couples of dancers from Argentina and the world will be participating.

The Great Opening of the Festival will be on Thursday, August 10th at Usina del Arte, with a concert at 8.30 pm Osvaldo Piro and his great orchestra "Azul Noche", with guest singers Patricia Barone, Alberto Bianco and Carlos Casado.

Many other concerts will be held at different venues during the Festival, including cultural centers, notable bars and theaters. Throughout the World Tango Festival classes of different levels and styles will be given by renowned dancers and instructors from recognized schools.

On the 25th anniversary of Astor Piazzolla’s death, the Festival will celebrate his work in a variety of styles, and commemorate Raúl Garello with the premiere of a tango dedicated to him. The Festival will also include A Historical Rescue, Women’s Perspectives, recent album debuts, international ensembles and career recognitions; shows for children, films and talks, music and history clinics and an array of more than thirty dance classes, in addition to its usual milonga with a live orchestra and a special exhibition dedicated to Alberto Castillo.

For shows at Espacio Cultural Julián Centeya, Espacio Cultural Carlos Gardel, Espacio Cultural Adán Buenosayres, Espacio Cultural Resurgimiento, La Casa del Tango, Teatro Monteviejo and La Academia del Tango, tickets can be picked up 1 hour before showtime at the venue’s Information Stand. A maximum of 1 (one) ticket will be available per person until venue capacity is reached.
Activities at Notable Bars do not require a ticket. Admission is on a first come, first served basis until venue capacity is reached.
For the Clinics at Sala de Cámara, no advance registration is required. Admission is with tickets that will be given out 1 (one) hour before start time at the Information Stand of Usina del Arte.
For Dance Classes that require advance registration, participants must register as a couple by sending an email to clasestangoba@festivales.gob.ar and must show up 30 minutes before start time at the Information Stand in the Classes Hall of Usina del Arte. Those who were unable to register via email may put their names on a waiting list at the Information Stand.

Tickets for Dance World Cup:
Admission to the Qualifying Rounds is without ticket and will be on a strict first-come, first-served basis.
Admission to the Semifinals is with ticket only. They will be given out 1 (one) hour before start time at the Information Stand of Usina del Arte. A maximum of 2 (two) tickets will be available per person until venue capacity is reached.
Tickets for the Finals of the Dance World Cup that will take place at Lunar Park on August 22nd and 23rd will be available for pick-up on Friday, August 18th from 11.00 am at Usina del Arte. 2 (two) tickets for each event will be given out per person until reaching the capacity of 10,000 seats.

Buenos Aires City Tango Dance Championship 2017


From Wednesday, May 10th until Sunday, May 21st of  2017, the Buenos Aires City Tango Dance Championship 2017 will be held at different "milongas", theaters, and cultural centers across the city.

The competition is on the look out for new winning couples in the categories Tango de Pista, "Milongueros" of the World, and Waltz, who will qualify to participate in the World Tango Dance Championship that will take place in Buenos Aires in August 2017.

The Qualifying rounds start on May 10th at Centro Cultural Julián Centeya (Av. San Juan 3255), with free admission. From Thursday, May 11th the competition will tour around the city: every day there will be qualifying rounds in the neighborhoods of Flores, Palermo, La Paternal, Boedo, Chacarita and Constitución. 

The Waltz and Milonga Semifinals will be held on Friday, May 19th, and the Tango de Pista Semifinal will be on Saturday, May 20th, all at 6.00 pm at Usina del Arte (Caffarena 1, La Boca), with free admission to the public (on a first-come, first-served basis). 

The Grand Final will take place on Sunday, May 21st, at 6.00 pm, also at the iconic building of Usina del Arte, in La Boca. The free tickets for the Final have to be picked up at Usina del Arte on Friday, May 19th, from 4.00 pm.

La Gran Milonga Nacional 2016 - Open Air Tango Dancing


"La Gran Milonga Nacional", an open air event with live orchestras and street tango dancing along Avenida de Mayo, which is transformed for one night into a giant dance floor, will take place on Saturday, December 3rd, 2016.

This fantastic event, which every year occupies the traditional Avenida de Mayo, from Plaza de Mayo to 9 de Julio Av. is organized by the National Tango Academy and the Association of Promoters of Tourism, Hotel Business and Gastronomy (APTHGRA), in honor of the National Tango Day which is celebrated on December 11th.

La Gran Milonga Nacional will start at 8:00 pm, and will last until 3 am, with three central stages in the corners of Avenida de Mayo with Bernardo de Irigoyen, Piedras and Perú, and other smaller ones along the avenue, where the audience will be able to dance on the street to the music of live Tango orchestras, with their dancers and singers.
