Julio Bocca's Ballet Argentino performs in Buenos Aires

Ballet Argentino, the company directed by Julio Bocca, will offer a series of performances from September 9th to 21st, 2008, at Teatro Maipo Buenos Aires, starring Eleonora Cassano, Hernan Piquin, and Cecilia Figaredo. These shows are part of a tour that includes cities around Argentina and Spain.

Program:

Nine Sinatra Songs:
This first part commemorates the traditional dancing ball room with a strong female participation. This work has become one of the classics by Twyla Tharp, with reminiscences of the social dancing of the 50's through the nostalgic look of the 80's. With choreography by Twyla Tharp and costume design by Oscar de la Renta. The songs, sung by Frank Sinatra, are: Softly, Strangers, One for my baby, My way, Something stupid, All the way, Domani, That’s life and My way.

Tango:
In 1975 Oscar Araiz created a ballet based on Argentine Tango, in a way no other choreographer could ever do. The traditional tangos were arranged by composer Atilio Stampone: Responso (Anibal Troilo), La puñalada (Pintin Castellanos), Silbando (Piana y Castillo), El día que me quieras (Carlos Gardel, Alfredo Le Pera), Mi refugio (J.C. Cobian) and El choclo (Angel Villoldo). Costume design by Renata Schussheim.

Bésame:
With choreography by Ana María Stekelman, Bésame is based on the bolero Bésame mucho, composed by Consuelo Velázquez in 1940, at the age of 24. Costume design also by Renata Schussheim.

2008 Tortugas Country Club Open Polo Championship

The traditional Tortugas Country Club Open Polo Championship will kick off this Tuesday, September 23, 2008, when six exceptional teams from 34 to 39 goals will be disputing the Emilio de Anchorena Cup.
This tournament is the first of the three great Polo Open Championships in the Official Spring Season of the Argentine Polo Association, marking the start of the honorable "Triple Crown". In this new edition of the Tortugas Open, 11 of the 12 Argentine players with the highest handicap will be participating, along with other team mates with the highest handicaps on the road to obtaining the 10 goals, making up the six most qualified teams in the Polo world.

Les Sylphides, Momentos and Raymonda, by Teatro Colon Ballet Company



The ballet company of Teatro Colón, with artistic direction by Olga Ferri, will offer a new program of performances at Teatro Coliseo.
The first part will be dedicated to "Les Sylphides", with choreography by Michael Fokin, on the original pieces for piano by Frederic Chopin. In this "romantic dream", conceived by Fokin in 1908, the poet is surrounded by the immaterial creatures, the "Sylphides". The main roles in this part will be performed by Karina Olmedo, Silvina Perillo, Natalia Saraceno, Analía Sosa Guerrero, Silvina Vaccarelli, Alejandro Parente y Juan Pablo Ledo.
The second part of the program will consist of "Momentos", with choreography by Jorge Amarante and music by Glover Gill, an American composer dedicated to Argentine Tango, with his group Glovertango. "Momentos" has been awarded as the best contemporary Theater-Dance play in 2003 by "Teatro XXI" magazine and selected to be presented at the IV Buenos Aires Tango World Championship.
The program will end with the Grand Pas of the third act of "Raymonda", with music by Alexander Glazunov and choreography by Marius Petipa. In the third act od this classical ballet, the wedding of the protagonist with Jean De Brienne takes place, performing Hungarian dances in their honor and the classic pas-de-deux by the protagonists. This brillant scene will be performed by Karina Olmedo (26-27) and Silvia Petrillo (28-29) as Raymonda, and Edgardo Trabalón (26-27) and Alejandro Parente (28-30) as Jean de Brienne.

IV Buenos Aires Antiquarian Book Fair

This annual event emphasizes the highly valuable cultural heritage of antique books, manuscripts, documents, engravings, maps and photographs available in the antiquarian bookstores of Buenos Aires, placing the city in an outstanding position among other cities where similar fairs are held, like Paris, Madrid, New York, or Milan.
The Fair will showcase over one thousand antique books, historical documents and photographs, primitive Argentine prints, first editions, and a great amount of diverse, carefully selected printed material.
