Puma Urban Art 2011 - Street Art Exhibition

Puma Urban Art 2011 is the meeting point for the best national and international urban artists. An original event, dedicated to contemporary art and the new trends on street art around the world, that will take place on Saturday 28 and Sunday 29 of May, 2011, at Centro Cultural Recoleta.

This fourth edition of the Festival will feature the presence of national and international artists, like British sculptor and painter D*Face, aka Dean Stockton, who will paint live in a way never seen before; Mark Dean Veca (USA) creator of large scale installations about surreal cartoon characters and psychedelic landscapes; Frank Kozik (USA), specialist in rock posters and design of vinyl toys; among many others.

One of the features this year will be the projection of films and documentaries related to the Urban Art movement, including the film Exit Through The Gift Shop, from 2010, the first film/documentary by British artist Banksy, as a premiere in Argentina; and short films by D*Face.

Exhibitions of national and international works; graffiti 3D; panel talks; national bands like El Chavez, No Lo Soporto, Dietrich, Maxi Trusso, Mujik, Ovnis, Manta Raya, Go Neko, Los Lenguas, Fantasmagoria, Coiffeur and Nairobi; live painting; conferences; pool, darts, table football, are some of the activities programmed for the event.

International Show Jumping Competition Gran Premio Sol de Mayo 2011


The annual show jumping competition Gran Premio Sol de Mayo, will take place between May 26th and 29th of 2011, at Club Hipico Argentino, with the participation of the best national and international riders from Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Bolivia, Paraguay, and Uruguay. This is one of the most important tournaments of the annual show jumping calendar in Argentina.

The two main events will be the "International Preliminary" for the World Cup Competition, on May 27th, and the "Gran Premio Sol de Mayo" (1.5m), that will take place on Sunday, May 29th, from 2:00 pm. 

There will be activities for the whole family, like the presence of marching bands, a show by tenors, vaulting exhibitions, free pony rides.

Rugby: Los Pumas vs Barbarians


The Argentine national Rugby team, Los Pumas, will meet the French team Barbarians on a friendly match on June 4th, 2011, 4.00 pm, at Club Atletico Independiente Stadium, in Avellaneda, Buenos Aires.
This match has been organized by the Argentine Rugby Union (UAR).
The team of Los Pumas will be made up of 14 of the players from Pampas XV, the Argentine team champion of the Vodacom Cup 2011 in South Africa. The coach, Santiago Phelan, has also included some of the historic figures of the national team, like Felipe Contepomi, Juan Martín Fernández Lobbe, Juan Leguizamón, Rodrigo Roncero y Martín Scelzo, among others, who obtained the 3rd place in the 2007 World Cup.
The French team will be comprised of some of the best players in the French rugby league.

Horse Racing: Gran Premio 25 de Mayo 2011


The Gran Premio 25 de Mayo, one of the most important classic races in the Argentine horse racing calendar, will take place next Wednesday, May 25th, 2011 at Hipodromo de San Isidro, from 1:00 PM.

The journey, that will be made up of 18 races, starts at 1:00 pm. The Great Prize (Gran Premio 25 de Mayo) race, run on a distance of 2400 meters on grass track, will take place at 5:40 pm.

Free circus show at the Obelisco

The great Canadian circus company Les 7 doigts de la main comes to Argentina to present its show "Casa de Nadie" (Nobody's home) on Saturday, May 28th, 2011, at 7:30 pm.
8,000 chairs will be placed in front of the stage that will be mounted at the Obelisk, Av. 9 de Julio and Av. Corrientes.
This show, that was specially conceived to be presented at the Obelisco, presents 11 international circus artists under the direction of Gypsy Snider, with the concept that the world is everybody's home.
The event will be free of charge.

Feria PuroDiseño 2011

Feria PuroDiseño is a space where design is the main protagonist. The goal of Feria PuroDiseño is to accompany and to promote this sector of the Argentine industry, as well as each and every one of its designers, as a platform for the promotion of local and international design and the stimulation to regional creativity.
This new edition of Feria PuroDiseño, from May 19th to May 25th , 2011, at the Pabellón Amarillo in La Rural, dedicated to "color", will exhibit the avant-garde works of over 250 designers in the fields of clothing, accessories, contemporary jewelry, equipment, objects, digital design, graphic design, contemporary craftsmanship, textile development, and lighting.

The Fair features different thematic spaces:
  • PuroVerde: this is the platform for eco-sustainable designers, which objective is to promote the social and ecological conscience on design through the use of recycled, natural or organic raw materials.

arteBA'11 Contemporary Art Fair


arteBA Contemporary Art Fair, that will take place on May 19 - 23, 2011, is the most popular cultural event in the city of Buenos Aires and the most important one of its kind in Latin America. arteBA is an art exhibition where art galleries display their best Latin American artworks, offering the general public the chance to come face to face with truly unique collectors’ pieces. It is also an opportunity for the newer art centers from all over the region to present their younger artists and reveal the very latest trends, which are simply absent from other art fairs. Over 800 Latin American artists present their works at this great cultural event.
arteBA Foundation called for the eighth edition of arteBA-Petrobras Prize for the Visual Arts. Each one of the selected projects will be awarded a determined amount of pesos to be used for its realization and exhibition at arteBA `11. Once the winning projects have been exhibited at the Fair, a second, International Prize-Giving Jury will award a (non-acquisitional) Incentive Prize of $ 50,000 pesos. The prize will be granted after the final in situ installation of the works.

Tango: City Dance Champhionship 2011

From May 4th to May 22nd, 2011, the City's Tango Dance Championship 2011 will be held in different "milongas", theaters, and open air locations across the city.
The competition is on the look out for new winning couples in the categories Salon Tango, Milonga and Waltz, who will qualify to participate in the World Tango Dance Championship that will take place in Buenos Aires in August 2011.
The Championship starts on May 4th at La Viruta. The qualifying rounds will continue until Sunday, May 15th at different clubs and milongas of the city, to arrive at semifinals on Wednesday 18 and Thursday 19 at La Viruta and El Pial. The final will be held on Saturday 21 at the picturesque colonial building of Colegio San José (Azcuénaga 158, Balvanera). And there will be a grand closing with an open air milonga, with a live orchestra and live exhibitions by the winners.

The main events are:
May 4th, 11:30pm: Opening of the Championship at La Viruta, Armenia 1366
May 7th, 6:00pm: Free Open Air Milonga at La Glorieta de Belgrano, 11 de Septiembre and Echeverria. In case of rain it will be moved to May 8th.

Buenos Aires Hop-on Hop-off Bus

   

At the moment the city of Buenos Aires offers two Hop-on Hop-off bus services.
The yellow buses managed by the city's tourism office have been running since May 2009. Starting March 2020, a new red bus managed by the international company Grey Line has started operating in Buenos Aires, offering a new alternative route. 

On both services a specialized tour guide on board provides visitors with informative material about the city, and audio guide is available in Spanish, English, Portuguese, German, Chinese, Italian, Japanese, Russian, and French.
It’s a Hop-On/Hop-Off service, which means you can get on and off the bus as many times as you like.

YELLOW ROUTE
The yellow buses run every 40 - 50 minutes, depending on traffic, from Monday to Sunday, 9:00 am to 5:00 pm.

Horse Racing: Gran Premio Republica Argentina 2011

One of the most important classics of the year, the "Gran Premio Republica Argentina" (GI), will take place on Sunday, May 1st, 2011, at Hipodromo Argentino de Palermo, Av. Libertador & Dorrego.
In this outstanding 2000-meter race compete the best 3 years old and older pure thoroughbred horses of the national and foreign equestrian activity. The Great Prize "Gran Premio Republica Argentina", at 5:30pm, will be the center of a spectacular journey that will start at 1:00 pm.
Other five big prizes (GI) are included: Great International Prize of the Americas, Breeders' Prize, Great International Prize of Buenos Aires City,  Great Prize Jorge de Atucha, and the Great Award Montevideo.
The Expo of the Provinces will be located in the center of the court.
A 3D mapping projection will be on display on the facade of the main entrance building from April 26th until the night of May 1st, featuring turf images, lights and special effects.

Solidarity event for the Japanese people affected by the tsunami




A solidarity event to help the victims of the earthquake in Japan, organizered by the Government of the City of Buenos Aires, the Nikkei Federation in Argentina (FANA) and the Okinawan Center in Argentina, will be held on Avenida de Mayo 500 (between Bolivar and Chacabuco), on Sunday April 17th, 2011, from 2:00 pm to 6:00 pm.

Artists from Argentina and the Japanese community will share an artistic encounter in a big stage with other diverse communities. There will be chairs for the audience to better appreciate the show. During the meeting FANA will receive voluntary donations in support of victims of the earthquake and tsunami that occurred in Japan last March 11, 2011.

37h Buenos Aires International Book Fair

The Buenos Aires International Book Fair is the largest of its kind in the Spanish speaking world. It is considered one of the most important cultural and editorial events in Latin America, and a meeting point for authors, editors, book sellers, distributors, teachers, librarians, scientists, and over 1,200,000 readers from around the world. The Fair will take place from April 20th to May 9th, 2011, occupying the "Azul", "Verde", "Amarillo", "Rojo", "Ocre", "Blanco", and Nº 9 pavilions of La Rural exhibition complex, and Palacio Frers.  As every year, it will feature conferences, round-tables, talks with prestigious national and international intellectuals, book presentations, shows, activities for children and teenagers, events for specialists and publishing professionals, and book sales of literature in all languages.

This year the Fair has a special importance since Buenos Aires has been chosen as World's Book Capital of 2011.

One of the outstanding features of the Fair is the participation of internationally renowned authors. International Polo Series Nations Cup 2011


The Nations Cup 2011 - International Polo Series (Copa de las Naciones 2011 - Serie Internacional de Polo), organized by the Argentine Polo Association, will take place on Thursday, April 21, 2011 at the Campo Argentino de Polo in Palermo (Av. Libertador y Dorrego).

The events starts at 12:00pm, with the opening of the stadium, food stalls, and live shows. The match will kick off at 3:00 pm, followed by the traditional "after polo".

This year the participating teams are the national selections of Argentina and England, the greatests representatives of world polo, with a maximum handicap of 28 goals for each team. This unique tournament is an important new addition to the national and international polo calendar.

Agassi and Sampras present an exhibition in Argentina

André Agassi and Pete Sampras, two of the world's best tennis players of all times, will offer an exhibition event in Argentina, on Wednesday, April 27th, 2011, in the suburb of Tigre, province of Buenos Aires.
Sampras, who has never come to Argentina, and Agassi, who played in Buenos Aires for the Davis Cup in 1988, will play in a stadium that has been specially built for the occasion, with capacity for 8500 spectators, with an outdoor hardcourt surface.
This event, called "The Agassi Sampras Tour en Argentina" is part of the farewell tour both tennis players have already offered in six countries in Latin America.
The program will consist of two matches, starting at 7pm, when Agassi will play Jim Courrier, former number 1 player in 1992, followed by Sampras against the American player Mardy Fish.

BAFICI - 13th Buenos Aires International Festival of Independent Cinema

The tirteenth edition of the Buenos Aires International Independent Film Festival (BAFICI) organized by the Ministry of Culture of the Government of the City of Buenos Aires, will take place from April 6 to April 17, 2011, under the artistic direction of Sergio Wolf.

In this new edition 426 international films will be screened in the 22 venues of the City of Buenos Aires that are hosting the festival. Some of the titles that make up this year's program are:
"Nuremberg: Its Lesson for Today" (USA, 1948) by Stuart Schulberg, presented by the director's daughter, Sandra Schulberg;
"Football is God" (2010), Danish movie about Boca Juniors;
3D projections: "Cave of Forgotten Dreams", by Werner Herzog; "Pequeñas voces", by Jairo Eduardo Carrillo; and "Crisis letal" by Spanish Santiago Segura.
"Ponette" (1996), "Le Petit Criminal" (1990) and "Le marriage a trois" (2010), by Jacques Doillon.
"A letter to Elia", the latest documentary by Martin Scorsese, co-directed with Kent Jones, about the movie maker Elia Kazan, with the presence of Frances Kazan, his widower.
"El Bulli: Cooking in Progress", by German director Gereon Wetzel.
To mention just a few of the hundreds of outstanding films that will be presented during the Festival.

The opening of the Festival will be held again at the Teatro 25 de Mayo with the  world premiere of the Argentinian film "Vaquero", by Juan Minujin.  The closing of the Festival will be with the film "Nader and Nisim, a Separation" (2011), by Iranian director Asghar Farhadi, winner of the Golden Bear in the 2011 Berlin Festival.
In this edition, the Festival continues with the Baficito Section successfully inaugurated in 2009 with programming dedicated to kids, with the premiere in Argentina of some outstanding films, lke: The Great Bear, by Esben Toft Jacobsen (Denmakr, 2011), Allez raconte!, by Jean-Christophe Roger (France/Luxembourg/Belgium, 2010); among others.
The national cinema will be present at this edition with a total of 42 feature films and 48 shorts, two of which participate in the International Competition.
The Open Air Cinema section will offer free screenings at Pasaje Carlos Gardel and Plaza San Martín de Tours.
The Modern Classics section continues, where great films restored in new copies will projected, like the complete version in 35 mm of "El Gatopardo" by Visconti (Italy/France,1963); "En el balcón vacío"(México, 1931) by Jomi García Ascot premiered at the MOMA; "The Bowler and the Bunnet", directed by Sean Connery; the Bolivian super production "Wara Wara", silent movie from the 30s directed by José María Velasco Maidana; and the restored version of the classic by Fritz Lang, "Metropolis", that will be projected accompanied by live music by trío Marcelo Katz. All with free entrance.
