National Museum of Decorative Arts Buenos Aires

The National Museum of Decorative Arts is the most beautiful museum in Buenos Aires. The building itself is worth the visit. Before being donated to the National Government along with all its works of art, this was the private residence of a very wealthy Argentinean family, the Errázuriz-Alvear. The building was designed by French architect Rene Sergent, the same architect who built the Trianon Palace Hotel in Versailles and the private residence of Count Nissim de Camondo, in Paris.

All the materials, like wood panelings, mirrors, moldings, were brought from Europe. The rooms in the main floor were decorated in different French styles from the XVII and XVIII century, except for the Grand Hall, inspired in the large rooms typical of XVI century England in the time of the Tudor dynasty.

In the apartments of the first floor we can also see the taste for French decoration in Louis XV, Louis XVI, Directory and Imperium style. The only exception is the Art Decó room decorated by Catalonian artist José María Sert.

The Dining Room and the Ball Room are copies in a smaller scale of similar rooms at the Versailles Palace.

The permanent collection of the museum includes more tan 4000 objects, from roman sculptures to contemporary hand made silver creations. The biggest interest in the collection is focused on the European and Oriental decorative pieces, sculptures and paintings from the XVI to XIX century, many of which belonged to the Errázuriz-Alvear family.

There are also temporary exhibitions throughout the year, focused mainly in decorative arts, fashion, tapestry, jewelry, and small objects.

There is a beautiful small caffe-restaurant in the courtyard with a lovely atmosphere.

Location: Av. del Libertador 1902
Opening times: Wednesday to Sunday, 1.00 PM to 7:00 PM.
Mondays and Tuesdays closed.
Guided visits: Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday, at 4:00 pm, without previous reservation.
Entrance to the Museum is FREE every day.
For more information on present and future exhibitions, visit National Museum of Decorative Arts official website.

El Agora de la Paz, large scale installation by Marta Minujín on exhibition in Palermo

A large scale installation by the renowned pop and performance Argentine artist Marta Minujín will be inaugurated on Thursday, October 3, 2013, 4.30 pm, at Plaza Alemania, Av. del Libertador & Cavia, in the neighborhood of Palermo.
Inspired on the Temple of Hephaestus, place where Greeks gathered in the V century BC to discuss democracy, this installation called “El Agora de la Paz" (The Agora of Peace) consists of 32 columns, several of them installed crooked on purpose, following the philosophy of the diagonals where everything changes according to one´s point of view. The temple is covered with books published by the artist containing quotations on Peace, Friendship and Freedom.
Just like all the ephemeral and mass participation artworks that Minujín performed, this one will also be installed in a public space. The 25,000 books that cover the temple will be offered to the public that attend on the closing day, in a collective performance act.
Similar to the “Parthenon” that Marta Minujín installed in 1983 with books banned during the dictatorship, the “Obelisk of sweet bread”, the “Carlos Gardel of Fire” and the “Tower of Babel of Books”,  “El Agora de la Paz” will be built with tubular structures, covered with 25,000 books wrapped in plastic bags and attached to the columns, entirely covering the surface.
The installation will be open to the public from Thursday October 4 until Sunday October 13, when visitors will be allowed to take away the books that compose the artwork.
Characters with white clothes reciting quotations from the books, choirs and orchestras will be performing every day during the project. The idea is to dazzle visitors visually by fluorescent colors, and mentally by the content of the sentences.
There will also be a series of programmed activities including lectures, storytelling and musical performances celebrating the last 30 years of democracy in Argentina.

Inauguration: Thursday, October 3, 4.30 pm
Open to the public October 4 - 13, 11 am to 7 pm
Dismantling and book handover: Sunday 13, from 3 pm.
FREE ENTRANCE
