The National Museum of Fine Arts

Situated on Libertador Avenue 1473, this museum has one of the most important art collections in Latin America. The ground floor of the museum houses a fine international collection of paintings from the Middle Ages up to the 20th century. It contains paintings by El Greco, Rubens, Tiepolo, Van de Velde, Tiziano, Zurbarán, and Goya, among others.

In April 2019, the Museum has been renewed to present to the public two permanent galleries dedicated to the Pre-Columbian Art and Colonial Art collections in the ground floor, with around 400 pre-Hispanic pieces from the Argentinian North-West cultures.

Nineteenth century French painting is thoroughly represented, with works by Corot, Manet, Boudin, Cézanne, Renoir, Toulouse-Lautrec, Rodin, Degas, and others. There are also works by 19th century and early 20th century Spanish artists, including Ramón Casas, Ignacio Zuloaga and Pablo Picasso.

The outstanding collection of sculptures includes one of the few original copies of Rodin´s “The kiss” that exist around the world.

On one of the most recent renovation projects the Museum has opened a new room for the Guerrico Collection.

The local art production is also represented in the Museum's galleries, with works by its leading representatives, such as Cándido López, Prilidiano Pueyrredón, Emilio Pettoruti, Xul Solar, Raquel Forner, Grete Stern, Antonio Berni, Alicia Penalba, Gyula Kosice, Marta Minujín, Antonio Seguí and León Ferrari. In addition, the Museum has outstanding holdings of other Latin American art, with an assemblage of pieces by Pedro Figari, Joaquín Torres García, Tarsila do Amaral, Diego Rivera and Jesús Rafael Soto, among others.

Historic photo exhibit: Darwin in Argentina

Centro Cultural Borges presents the historic-photographic exhibition "Darwin in Argentina", honoring the renowned English scientist and his journey through Argentina. The year 2009 has been declared as the Darwin Year worldwide, in celebration of the bicentennial of Darwin's birthday, and sesquicentennial of publication of his book "The Origin of Species".
In 1831, at only 22, Darwin embarked as a naturalist on the H.M.S. Beagle commanded by Captain Fitz Roy on a 5-year journey around the world. Between 1833 and 1835 Darwin visited Argentina as part of that trip. He registered the customs of its inhabitants, the features of its flora and fauna, the fossils, and the geological aspects of our territory. These data were fundamental for the development of his theory of evolution.
The exhibition is organized in different themes: Darwin in Argentina; Darwin's journey through Patagonia; the Theory of Evolution; the Beagle; and a series of illustrations that depict the influence of Darwin's thoughts on other areas of culture.

Dondoh Matsuri - The Fire Ceremony at the Japanese Garden

On Sunday, August 23, 2009, the Japanese Garden of Buenos Aires (Av. Figueroa Alcorta and Casares, Palermo) presents the festival "Dondoh Matsuri - The Fire Ceremony".
This is an ancient tradition celebrated before the times of the Samurais at the Dondoh Yaki. In this ceremony, the God of Fire is invoked so the God of Earth wakes up from his winter sleep. The God of Fire warms up the Earth so the seeds germinate, and also protects the harvests.
The public will receive small wooden boards that will be hung on the iron tree and burnt, so the flames raise their prayers as they go up.
These are the steps to follow to complete the wooden boards:
1) Reflect on the past year.
2) Think on the facts or things that made you uncomfortable.
3) Write them on the board
4) Hang the board on the metallic tree.
5) During the bonfire, repeat mentally your desire that those disturbing things won't happen again and that they become energy that the soil needs for the crops to grow strong.
The main goal is to become free of the bad omen, and desire that the bad energy turns into prosperity.
The Festival of Fire will be accompanied by traditional dances and songs, Karate Do exhibitions, and a show of Japanese Drums by the group Mukaito Taiko

Program of Activities:
12.30 to 1.50 pm: ParaPara Workshop
