100th Salon Nacional de Artes Visuales 2011

The Salón Nacional de Artes Visuales, which takes place every year at Palais de Glace, is the most important contest in Argentina in the field of fine arts, covering painting, sculpture, engraving, drawing, photography, ceramics, textile art, and new supports and installations.

This competition, that celebrates its 100th anniversary this year, started in 1911 as an annual painting and sculpture exhibition hall sponsored by the Fine Arts National Commission. Since 1932, Palais de Glace is the permanent venue for the Salon Nacional de Artes Visuales.

From September 21st to October 16th, 2011, the awarded works from all the disciplines and all the selected works for the "Painting" category will be exhibited to the public.

La Semana del Arte - Buenos Aires Art Week 2011

On Sunday, September 25th, 2011, the most important art event starts in Buenos Aires: "La Semana del Arte 2011" (Buenos Aires Art Week 2011). For the eighth consecutive year, nearly 100 art galleries, museums, and cultural centers will take part in a seven-day event in which visitors will be able to enjoy guided visits, conferences, concerts, special Gallery Nights, and diverse cultural and artistic activities, all of them free of charge.

Casa FOA 2011


Casa FOA is the most important yearly exhibition where decorators, architects, designers, and landscapers, selected for their talent and prestige, showcase the local and international trends in architecture, interior design, and landscaping. It will take place this year at Centro Metropolitano de Diseno (Metropolitan Design Center) with the name "Casa FOA CMD Design Market", from September 9th to October 10th, 2011, in the neighborhood of Barracas, one of the most ancient neighborhoods in Buenos Aires together with Monserrat and San Telmo.
The exhibit will feature more than 50 architectural spaces that will make up the 7700 square meters of a renovated old building.
Casa FOA was born in 1985 as an initiative of Mercedes Malbrán de Campos and a group of ladies with the purpose of raising funds for the Argentine Ophthalmology Foundation "Jorge Malbrán" (FOA). With a growing success, Casa FOA has become one the most important events in the country´s cultural agenda.
The strategic selection of the venues and the careful and profound restoration of the chosen buildings give every edition of Casa FOA an indisputable value for the community, making it possible to associate its name not only to Argentine design but also to the preservation of buildings of great historic and cultural value, like: Casa de la Moneda (1995), Hotel de Inmigrantes (2000), Monasterio de Santa Catalina (2001), Casa del Patio de la Reconquista (2003), Hotel Avenida de Mayo (1991), Puerto Madero Dock 5 (1993), Palacio Alcorta (1994), Tattersal de Palermo (1998) Apostadero Naval (2000), Terrazas de Buenos Aires (2002), Tribuna II Palermo (2004), Puerto de Frutos de Tigre (2008), among others.

FIBA - International Buenos Aires Theater Festival

Organized by the Ministry of Culture of the City of Buenos Aires, the International Buenos Aires Festival (Festival Internacional de Buenos Aires -FIBA), will take place between September 24th and October 8th, 2011.
FIBA takes place every two years, featuring diverse artistic expressions through theater, dance and musical theater. FIBA offers special activities such us open talks with artists, workshops and masterclasses, books presentations, the second Laboratory Workshop for young students, and the Graphic Exhibition for Theater Productions by Gonzalo Martínez.
This year the international program features the acclaimed work by Peter Brook, "Une flûte enchantée", version of Mozart's opera; two great German companies: Schaubühne am Lehniner Platz with a "Hamlet" direccted by Thomas Ostermeier, and Volksbühne am Rosa Luxemburg-Platz with "Ich schau dir in die Augen, gesellschaftlicher Verblendungszusammenhang!", by René Pollesch. 
Other outstanding presentations include French actor, director and régisseur Patrice Chéreau, with the debut in Buenos Aires of "Patrice Chéreau lit Le Gran Inquisiteur", based on Karamazov Brothers, by Fédor Dostoievski. And German musician and director Heiner Goebbels, with a show that combines live music, theater and dance called "Eraritjaritjaka". 
Spain will be represented by the youth revelation Angélica Liddell, and by Flamenco singer Estrella Morente. From Italy: Compañía Motus.
A version of Medea will be presented in a French production with cast from Burkina Faso.
The Latin American theater will feature creations from Uruguay ("Chaika", by Mariana Percovich), Mexico ("Las cajas voyeuristas" by La Biznaga) and Chile ("Villa+Discurso" by Guillermo Calderón, and "La amante fascista", with Paulina Urrutia). And the debut in our country of Sao Paulo Companhia de Dança with a triple program of works by Jiri Kylián, Nacho Duato and Marie Chouinard.

Caminos y Sabores (Roads and Flavors) 2011


The 7th edition of "Caminos y Sabores" (Roads and Flavors), will feature during 5 days the offers in typical food, tourism and handicrafts from all the regions in the country.
The Argentine provinces will be represented in the exhibition through their native foods. As every year from the first edition in 2005, visitors will be able to sample and buy olive oil; home made salamis; cow, sheep and goat cheeses; wines from family owned wineries; homemade jellies, just to mention some of the products. There will also be tourist offers of all kinds at the Tourism Road, and a variety of handicrafts made with the typical materials and features of every region.
In the Cooking Room (Sala de Cocinas), at every moment, different chefs will be preparing dishes based on Argentine typical ingredients; and at the Conference Room, specialists in every topic will talk about tourism, regional food, territorial development, and other subjects related to the Argentine culture.

Wines and Wineries' Fair Vinos & Bodegas Cosecha 2011


Vinos y Bodegas, Cosecha 2011 (Wines and Wineries, 2011 Edition), will take place from September 14th to 17th, 2011, at La Rural Exhibition Center. The most important Fair for the Wine Industry in Latin America will offer visitors the opportunity to enjoy the most renowned wine labels from traditional and boutique wineries in Argentina, in the 5000 m2 Pavilion where the event will take place.
A new feature this year is the art space "Arte&Vino", an exhibition of more than 25 oak wine barrels painted by artists from around the country: Ernesto Bertani, Enrique Burone Risso, Mauro Cano, Ricardo Celma, Claudio Gallina, Graciela Genoves, Sol Halabi, Juan Manuel Jaimes Roy, Antonio Sarelli Daniel Kaplan, Juan Lascano, María Linzoain, Milo Lockett, Mario Pérez, Silvana Robert, Mario Sanzano, Mario Vidal Lozano, Néstor Villar Errecart. Paintings related to the wine world, by Agustín Viñas, Ernesto Bertani, Juan Lascano, and the famous sculpture “Racimos” by Luis Falcini, (1922) complement the exhibit. 
High end wines from the wineries participating in the fair can be tasted at the Wine Bar. Visitors will also be able to stroll through Paseo de las Olivas, a space dedicated to the progress that our country has made in the production of olive oil. Also present will be all wine schools, with different proposals to form increasingly informed consumers.
Cooking shows will be presented to show the preparation of dishes and advice the visitors about the best pairings between food and wine. Again this year, the Wine Store will be the space for those wishing to buy wine labels.
For the past years Argentina has been positioned in the international wine market among the five main wine producers worldwide, after France, Italy, Spain, and United States.

Celebration of the Moon Festival at the Chinese Quarter


On Sunday, September 11th, 2011, the Mid-Autumn Festival, also known as the Moon Festival, will be celebrated for the first time in Buenos Aires, in the streets of the Chinese Quarter in Belgrano, on Arribeños Street, from Blanco Encalada to Juramento
The activities will take place between 12:00pm and 8:00pm.
The Mid-Autumn Festival is one of the most important holidays in the Chinese calendar, together with the Chinese New Year. Sometimes referred to as the Lantern Festival or Mooncake Festival, traditionally on this day Chinese family members and friends gather to admire the bright mid-autumn harvest moon, and celebrate the end of the fall harvesting season.
A large stage with lights and sound will be mounted on Arribeños and Olazabal for the public to enjoy a great event that will feature the traditional Dragon and Lion Dance, Oriental Martial Arts, Traditional Dance Mulan, Exhibition of ancient instruments; as well as a tango show with live orchestra and international couples made ​​up of Argentinian and Oriental dancers; choirs of young Argentine singers who will sing Chinese songs and Chinese artists who sing traditional and modern themes; a Hip Hop Fusion-Oriental dance group, explanation of Chinese Horoscope, among many other activities.
More than 60 stalls will be places in the streets to offer traditional food and cultural items.
The celebration will end at rise of the moon, when all together will sing on stage "The moon represents my heart".

Polo: The 2011 Jockey Club Open Championship at San isidro


The magnificent fields of Buenos Aires Jockey Club, located in the town of San Isidro, North of Buenos Aires, will be home of one of the most important polo tournaments in our country: the 47th Jockey Club Open Championship, which opens the high handicap polo season in Argentina. It will take place on September 10th, 11th, and 17th, 2011.
The four teams in the tournament are made up by some of the players that will participate in the Argentine Triple Crown.

Expotrastiendas 2011, the Art Galleries' Exhibition

Expotrastiendas, the art fair organized since 2001 by the Argentine Association of Art Galleries (Asociación Argentina de Galerías de Arte or AAGA) aims to promoting and disseminating visual arts, helping artists to show their production in a different context, which attracts collectors and buyers as well as the general public.
Between September 1 and 5, 2011, the Fair will offer different spaces curated by specialists, tributes to the great sculptor Magda Frank and Juan Melé, and art galleries' stands selected by the Selection Jury composed by Juan Doffo, Ricardo Blanco, Alejandro Dávila, Lilian Llañez Godoy and Ernesto Muñoz.
The artists of the new generation will have their place at "Young Platform", and the art of the provinces will be represented at the space "Usina" (Factory).
Talks about the art market, sponsorship, art collecting, biennials and fairs will be held every day at the auditorium.

2011 Tango Buenos Aires Festival and World Dance Competition

The 2011 Tango Buenos Aires Festival and World Dance Competition, organized by the Ministry of Culture of Buenos Aires, will be held between August 16th and August 30th, 2011.
This new edition features more than a hundred shows and free activities including concerts and dance performances, popular milongas, shows, conferences and clinics, a film series, exhibition and sale of products, dance classes in various levels and styles, and a competition in which the best couples of dancers from Argentina and the world will be participating.
Throughout the World Tango Festival classes of different levels and styles will be given by renowned dancers and instructors from recognized schools. Music from the 40's, live orchestras, mixed with electronic and rock music will liven up traditional milongas and alternative parties. The grand opening and closing milongas and the welcome ball for the 400 couples that will arrive to compete at the Dance World Cup.

SPECIAL ACTIVITIES:
There will be book presentations, conferences and informative talks about historical figures. A film series by the Bafici devoted to films related to tango. WORLD DANCE COMPETITION:
This is the celebration that makes Buenos Aires the mecca for tango dancers around the world. The event rewards the best couples in the Tango Salon category, which stresses the social dance as a practice rooted in Buenos Aires, and Stage Tango, which aims to enrich the dance from a choreographic point of view. More than 400 couples from around the world measure their talents.
The World Cup culminates in two major finals in the Luna Park stadium, on Monday 29 and Tuesday 30.

Admission to all the activities and shows of the Tango Buenos Aires Festival and World Cup is free, on a first-come, first-served basis until the venue reaches capacity. The only shows that require ticket pick-up are those scheduled at CCC Teatro 25 de Mayo and the Semifinal and Final Rounds of the Dance World Cup.
Tickets for the activities scheduled at Teatro 25 de Mayo will only be available for pick-up on the day of the show at the theater’s box office, 11 a.m.–6 p.m, at Av. Triunvirato 4444. A maximum of 2 (two) tickets will be given out per person.
Tickets for the Semifinal Rounds and Final Rounds will be available for pick-up on Monday, August 22, 11 AM–7 PM, at Casa de la Cultura, Av. de Mayo 575. 2 (two) tickets for one of the Semifinal Rounds and 2 (two) tickets for one of the Final Rounds will be given out per person, having to choose between the categories Salon Tango or Stage Tango.

Brazilian celebration in Buenos Aires

This event is part of a program of festivities destined to pay homage to the different communities present in the city, that has been carried out throughout the year. This time the invited country will be Brazil, in an artistic and cultural event that will take place on Sunday, September 11th, 2011, at the corner of Avenida de Mayo and Bolivar.
The event will start at 12.00 pm. Musical shows and dance groups will represent the varied Brazilian musical rhythms: Axé, pagode, bossa nova, forró, african dances, and capoeira, to culminate in a grand finale on a big stage in Av. de Mayo and Bolivar.
Visitors will also be able to enjoy exhibitions of Brazilian gastronomy and crafts, among other activities.

Motocross exhibition on Av. 9 de Julio

For the first time the Red Bull X-Fighters Jams come to Buenos Aires to startle audiences this Saturday, September 24th, 2011, on Ave 9 de Julio between Viamonte and Tucuman.

The dizzying display of jumps and freestyle motocross tricks is a full sample of the Red Bull X-Fighters World Tour, which for several years has become virtually the world championship in the field. Created back in 2001, the Red Bull X-Fighters concept has grown to become the biggest and most respected freestyle motocross tour on the planet. While the world’s best riders throw down mad tricks in stunning locations across the globe, local riders are hard at work bringing FMX to brand new countries with a series of Red Bull X-Fighters Jams. These events already have cult status in the cities they have visited, with top riders from the region joining some of the finest shooting stars from the international scene to put on an insane show in front of tens of thousands of people.

This time they will do it in Buenos Aires, opposite the legendary Teatro Colón, with a spectacular display of backflips, and an incredible array of tricks with names as provoking as "deadbody", "kiss of death", "superman" and "tsunami". A specially set ramp will propel the riders - individually, in pairs or in groups - to about nine meters high, to make the most incredible stunts, to complete the flight about 23 meters ahead on another ramp called "receiver".

The event starts at 3:00 pm, but make sure to be there early to secure a good viewing spot. Entrance is free.

BAFWeek - Buenos Aires Fashion Week Spring/Summer 2011-2012

The most important event for the Argentine fashion industry, BAFWeek, brings together the most established brands in the fashion world and the independent designers, for the launching of their Spring/Summer 2011-2012 collections.
For this edition top brands as Wanama, Rapsodia, Swatch, Como quieres que te quiera; and designers from Tramando, Juana de Arco, Evangelina Bomparola, Vicki Otero, Cora Groppo, Amores Trash Couture, María Vázquez, Hermanos Estebecorena, Mariana Dappiano, Marcelo Senra, Varanasi, Garza Lobos Grupo 134, A.Y. Not Dead, Cheeky, among others, have confirmed their presence.
BAFWeek 2011 will feature daily fashion shows, and around 30 showrooms where designers will showcase their creations in an exclusive space, including accessories, shoes, bags, jewels, underwear, and men's and women's clothes. 
As always, BAFWeek supports UBA students through the Seed Plot contest so they can show their first collections, together with the famous designers.
The campaign concept for this edition is DENIM, to show the processes and the evolution of this material in the textile route.

Free outdoor ice skating rink in Recoleta

This winter, for the first time in history, Buenos Aires will have an outdoors, public and free ice skating rink, in the style of New York's Rockefeller Center and Central Park rinks, and Moscow's Red Square rink.
It has been installed in Recoleta, at Plaza Uruguay, surrounded by Libertador and Figueroa Alcorta avenues and streets Austria and Tagle
It will open on Monday, July 25, 2011, as promised by the Ministry of Public Space of Buenos Aires, and will operate for 30 consecutive days.
The 450 square meters rink will have a capacity of 100 people skating simultaneously, with shifts of 30 minutes per person in order of arrival to avoid crowds.
There will be specialized personnel to oversee the skating and free skates will be lend to the public.
A number of places will be reserved for children under 12, since the first days of operation coincide with the winter school holidays.
The rink will have artificial lighting, and it will be open every day 9:00 am to 12:00pm, and  2:00pm to 9:00pm.
